Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Star Wars: Aftermath [reveals] what happened after the events of 1983’s Return of the Jedi. It turns out, there’s more than just the Empire for the good guys to worry about.”—The Hollywood Reporter

As the Empire reels from its critical defeats at the Battle of Endor, the Rebel Alliance—now a fledgling New Republic—presses its advantage by hunting down the enemy’s scattered forces before they can regroup and retaliate. But above the remote planet Akiva, an ominous show of the enemy’s strength is unfolding. Out on a lone reconnaissance mission, pilot Wedge Antilles watches Imperial Star Destroyers gather like birds of prey circling for a kill, but he’s taken captive before he can report back to the New Republic leaders.

Meanwhile, on the planet’s surface, former rebel fighter Norra Wexley has returned to her native world—war weary, ready to reunite with her estranged son, and eager to build a new life in some distant place. But when Norra intercepts Wedge Antilles’s urgent distress call, she realizes her time as a freedom fighter is not yet over. What she doesn’t know is just how close the enemy is—or how decisive and dangerous her new mission will be.

Determined to preserve the Empire’s power, the surviving Imperial elite are converging on Akiva for a top-secret emergency summit—to consolidate their forces and rally for a counterstrike. But they haven’t reckoned on Norra and her newfound allies—her technical-genius son, a Zabrak bounty hunter, and a reprobate Imperial defector—who are prepared to do whatever they must to end the Empire’s oppressive reign once and for all.

Critic reviews

“[Chuck] Wendig neatly captures the current states of the Empire and Rebel Alliance and does so through flawed, real, and nuanced characters. His writing gets you up close and personal. . . . Wendig does wonders with dialogue and voice and carving out space for everyone to breathe. Aftermath is a strong foot forward into unexplored territory and puts down just enough foundation that you can start picturing the Resistance and First Order of The Force Awakens taking shape.”Nerdist

“The Force is strong with Star Wars: Aftermath.”—Alternative Nation

“The Star Wars universe is fresh and new again, and just as rich and mysterious as it always was.”Den of Geek

Absolute slog to finish

Book is far too busy with too many characters being introduced at various points. Least enjoyable Star Wars book I’ve came across. Difficulty to finish and needs a lot of effort to get through

What a trip! But could use a map.

As an avid Star Wars fan I found the interweaving of extended universe lore fascinating but man, I needed to google a lot while listening.
Wendig's descriptors are deep enough to really fill out the world as to paint beautiful visual images and his characters are full of personality and whimsy.
Marc Thompson deserves all the credit he receives with this! An incredible range of character voices all sounding different to the last.

Not much happens

Quite a long book with not much substance. Out of all the canon books I have listened to so far this is probably one of the most boring. I hope the "sum of its parts" will make this book more worth while as I listen to the rest of the trilogy.

ALL OVER THE PLACE

Someone thanked the narrator for his performance.... He's the only reason I got to the end
The story is all over the place With parts that bear no relevance to the story... Easy one to give a miss

Better as an audiobook

I had originally tried to read this story myself, but personally found the writing style to not be to my taste. Marc Thompson however is phenomenal as per, and makes up this shortcoming for me, and truly delivers the experience I wanted from this book in the first place - fleshing out the state of the galaxy after the death of Palpatine.

Good

amazing story, but personally I want a fan of how many interludes there were. This won't stop me from listening to it again though

Not sure what this book is trying to accomplish.

Story mostly boring with interludes that are completely out of place. Production is very good so kudos for that but as a Star Wars fan I can hear lots of wrong sounds and music. Episode I soundtrack should be left alone and there is lots of Naboo and Separatist SFX in fights. Feels wrong for a book set after ep 6.

Overall not impressed. If this is the norm of all new canon books, then I think I will pass.

Great Performance, average story

Marc Thompson makes a weak story into something that's really entertaining. If I was reading this I would have struggled to finish the book aa it was only the last 3rd of the story where it starts getting interesting.

The audio production is top quality with the sound effects and music helping the listener to be transported into the galaxy that's far far away.

The story struggles to gain momentum as it had to introduce alot of new characters with multiple story lines which made it harder to follow compared with other Star Wars books. As this is the first of three books I'd expect the next two to be better.
