About this listen

The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

Critic reviews

"Tamsyn Muir's absorbing storytelling and Moira Quirk's immersive performance create a richly imagined fantasy world.... Quirk is at turns antagonistic, vulnerable, and hopelessly helpful as she characterizes all the participants and stewards of Canaan House.... Listeners will eagerly anticipate the trilogy's next installment." (AudioFile Magazine)

This is one of the best books that I’ve ever listened to. I’ve never read or listened to anything quite like it.

The narrator is excellent and brought everything to life. She does five star sarcasm! The book is one of those books where you just have no idea what is coming next. Gideon is definitely one of the best characters ever. And no one has ever had better dialogue. Roll on book two!

One of the best books I’ve ever listened to.

The narrator really brought this book to life, I'm definitely going to look for other books she had narrated after listening to this one. I knew I was going to enjoy this book by the premise and the blurb, but I had no idea quite how much. definitely would recommend for any reader looking for really strong and interesting female characters.

Absolutely Fantastic.

This was a surprise, expecting pulp but got brilliance. The writing is imaginative, new and the dialogue would give Whedon a run for his money. A fantastic new science fantasy romp and the narrator did a superb job which really brought the characters to life. Can’t wait for the next book in this series.

I save 5 stars for true greats, but this was an enjoyable.book. it was a quirky and original concept. characters were not fully rounded, but were far from being 2 dimensional either .... and there is something about Gideon that just made me root for her. THe plot eas well paced. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
