Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Long before the First Order, before the Empire, before even The Phantom Menace...Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in the High Republic.

It is a golden age. Intrepid hyperspace scouts expand the reach of the Republic to the furthest stars, worlds flourish under the benevolent leadership of the Senate and peace reigns, enforced by the wisdom and strength of the renowned order of Force users known as the Jedi. With the Jedi at the height of their power, the free citizens of the galaxy are confident in their ability to weather any storm. But the even brightest light can cast a shadow, and some storms defy any preparation.

When a shocking catastrophe in hyperspace tears a ship to pieces, the flurry of shrapnel emerging from the disaster threatens an entire system. No sooner does the call for help go out than the Jedi race to the scene. The scope of the emergence, however, is enough to push even Jedi to their limit. As the sky breaks open and destruction rains down upon the peaceful alliance they helped to build, the Jedi must trust in the Force to see them through a day in which a single mistake could cost billions of lives.

Even as the Jedi battle valiantly against calamity, something truly deadly grows beyond the boundary of the Republic. The hyperspace disaster is far more sinister than the Jedi could ever suspect. A threat hides in the darkness, far from the light of the age, and harbours a secret that could strike fear into even a Jedi's heart.

This was essentially my first audiobook, so I can’t give the best judgement on the acting - which seemed pretty good considering it’s one guy doing all the voices, but certainly doesn’t come close to a TV show or movie - but I loved the story and am excited for this new addition to the Star Wars universe. Some cool new concepts, interesting characters and a good amount of genuinely “edge of your seat” moments. I certainly recommend this book to anyone looking for an intro to this new era or just for a cool story inside the Star Wars EU, although I’m not sure I’m totally bought on the equality of the audiobook vs visual book experience yet.

Great - I think?

People will have many views, but the audio book is great fun with lots of recognisable music and sound effects, well done for creating something different :)

I haven’t finished the book yet but felt I had to leave a review purely based on the narration. First things first - the story itself is pretty good. But the voice work alone makes me want to give up on the story. Which is a shame because this is quite an exciting time for a Star Wars fan. It feels like the story is being told by an embarrassing uncle. Why do half the characters either have a cockney accent or a Russian accent? Some of the voices are so comical I’ll be physically laughing out loud just out of pure confusion. You’ll end up paying more attention to the dodgy voices each character has been given instead of what the characters are actually saying. For such a pivotal book in one of the biggest franchises of all time, why on earth would you allow such poor narration! Who signed off on this?

Embarrassing narration/Good story

Wanted to get back into my audible account and thought I'd give the high republic a look. Really impressed with the narrator, and it's a good, well paced story that is packed with memorable characters that definitely left me eager for a sequel. if you're a fan of star wars of any type, this is a great purchase.

Fantastic start to a new star wars era
