About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Black Sheep is read by Natalie Simpson, star of Les Misérables.

Abigail Wendover has no time for love.

She is far too busy protecting her niece, who has fallen madly in love with a suspected fortune-hunter.

But her efforts become vastly more complicated with the arrival of Miles Calverleigh, the black sheep of his family - a reckless bachelor with a scandalous past.

Abby soon discovers that, despite successfully managing her niece's love life, she has far less control over her own unruly heart.

My favourite reader is Philada Nash. This one was passable. Enjoyed the story all over again.

Addicted to bridge the Heyer

I have been listening (again) to half a dozen of Georgette Heyer’s Regency novels. I have had the opportunity to fully appreciate the elegance of her writing style, her large vocabulary and her wit as well as her renowned story telling. First time of reading its the story that pulls you into the book and keeps you turning the page. Second time, too. But third time and later it’s the details that are so engaging. Ms Heyer has researched the period thoroughly and knows the national and international events as well as the domestic details of the lives both of the ‘haut ton’ and of the middle and lower classes.
Sadly, of the six or so readers I have listened to only TWO have known how to read these books. Of the other four, two were painful to listen to (wrong regional accents, & continual mispronunciations making it evident they didn’t understand Heyer’s vocabulary) & two had fewer but persistent and irritating mistakes (most often. pronouncing ‘ton’ not in the French manner but as ‘tunn’!).
I made the mistake of cancelling my older downloads, believing that as I had bought the books I could access them again whenever I wished. When I opened the books again, the readers were different! And awful! Only Matt Addis and Natalie Simpson (I hope I have remembered Natalie’s surname correctly) had the skill to read ALL the words correctly, use RP for the narrator and the educated classes and regional accents only when the characters required them. They were both a joy to listen to, as they did their job brilliantly - of conveying the true glory of Heyer’s words and stories: enhancing and not distracting from them in any way. More of their work, please - replace the others!

Good story beautifully read

I love Georgette Heyer books, and although I have almost all the unabridged audio titles, I still like to find another version with a good narration - its almost like finding a new book. I thoroughly enjoyed my previous version of this, and this one is equally as good. It will be difficult to decide which to listen to next time I fancy laughing out loud at the way unconventional Miles Calverleigh ignores social rules of the day, and goes his own casual way to achieve his own desires. A very good example of life in Bath during this period.

An excellent narration of a favourite book

Abigail Wendover, the most sensible of her family, is one of the last 2 spinsters of the family, in charge of their niece Fanny - 17 years old and an heiress to boot!

Abigail is also the one member of her family that the rest of them depend on for every little thing. Which is why it is ironic that the eldest surviving male sibling, James, pays little attention to her opinions or views.

The story circles around the fate of Fanny, who falls prey to a dashing fortune hunter, Stacey Calverleigh (whilst Abigail was absent from Bath). She learns his name and, having yet to make his acquaintance, mistakes his Black Sheep uncle for him in a chance encounter.

So begins an amusing tale of wills and propriety. Amusing and sad in parts, but very enjoyable. At the conclusion, one wishes that Miss Heyer had written a sequel to this tale.

I’m used to the former narration and it was one of the best however, this is passable. It is better than many such interpretations, but it is not the best. It will do.

One of the best Heyer’s

I may have to listen to another version as the narrator was v off putting. Story was light and entertaining, different from the other Georgette Heyers I’ve read. But lovely escapism.

Entertaining story. Annoying narration
