THE LANDMARK MEMOIR OF A GLOBAL MUSIC ICON
SHORTLISTED FOR THE IRISH BOOK AWARDS 2021

Sinéad O'Connor's voice and trademark shaved head made her famous by the age of twenty-one. Her recording of Prince's 'Nothing Compares 2 U' made her a global icon. She outraged millions when she tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II on American television.

O'Connor was unapologetic and impossible to ignore, calling out hypocrisy wherever she saw it. She remained that way for over three decades.

In her acclaimed No 1 bestselling memoir Rememberings, O'Connor told her story - the heartache of growing up in a family falling apart; her early forays into the Dublin music scene; her adventures and misadventures in the world of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll; the fulfilment of being a mother; her ongoing spiritual quest - and through it all, her abiding passion for music.

Rememberings is intimate, replete with candid anecdotes and full of hard-won insights. It is a unique and remarkable chronicle by a unique and remarkable artist.

firstly, this has to be one of the best autobiography I have ever listened to and the only one that I want to go out and buy in hard back, what an addition to my books on my bookshelf.
Sin'ead O'connor beautiful Irish voice is captivating , and her story very honest. Also being the same age I can relate to so much of the book , its music, culture and attitudes of the time, and I can say Sin'ead was way ahead of her time with music and activism.such a Brave outspoken women, very underestimated!I love how there were chapters devoted to the story behind some of her songs and Albums, and Through this book I have also discovered her music for the first time. I certainly missed the boat but better late than never! Theology has the most beautiful songs on it I have ever heard I Love it . I've always been driven to Irish voices and music , im only 1/3rd Irish, but I'm guessing that's the stronger gene coming through. Thankyou Sin'ead, and good luck with the rest of your life , keep making music and being your honest self 💜

I really enjoyed this book, it opened my eyes to things that were before brushed off as the ramblings/antics of a musical nut. It also made me want to listen to Sineads music again so I've been finding some stuff I didn't even realise she did. Hers is an inspirational story in my opinion .My only disappointment is that I've read to the end now, I wanted to hear more!!

A really good listen!

I've always admired Sinead O’Connor for her integrity and bravery. This is a raw and unflinching account of her life - just as you'd expect. But it’s also funny and revealing.

The book is in two parts, as Sinead became ill during its completion. The first part is a relatively straight retelling of her childhood years - including beatings at the hands of her mother, and her subsequent death when Sinead was a teenager. In her own words, Sinead is a difficult child, troublesome and often moving between schools. She never blames her parents for her behaviour - she attributes her mental difficulties to genetic traits of depression and an incident when she was hit by the door of a passing dart train at blackrock station.

The second part is more episodic and scattered, losing some of the drive of the first. It moves faster, documenting her children, Rastafarianism and Islam, mental health troubles and relationships. I enjoyed Sinead reading the book, and she tells us at one stage that she and Donal Lunny produced her sixth album (the excellent Sean Nos Nua album) and then with a giggle, also her third child. She's got a wicked sense of humour that's on show throughout and there are some glorious anecdotes here. It’s in this section that Sinead comes across as incredibly vulnerable and at times deeply troubled.

Dylan, Lou Reed, Dr Phil (Asshole) and Muhammad Ali all feature, and there’s an incredibly weird incident with Prince. The furore around her appearance on Saturday night is gripping as is the fallout from it. As Sinead reminds us, she is a protest singer, not a pop star.

There's a lot of pain on show throughout the book, but there's also resilience. Sinead never wanted fame, and very much dances to the beat of her own drum. She takes great solace in her faith and seems to be in a better place by the books end. After listening to this, I have even more respect for her - she has both integrity and strength of character, and her voice is a gift to us all. A true trailblazing legend and a book to do her justice.

Raw and uncompromising
