Critic reviews

Following directly on from the cliffhanger ending of Crossfire, multiple narrators bring things to a bold, heartbreaking but ultimately satisfying finale. The narrative is spliced with news stories that cleverly mirror current events, touching on race, power, corruption and the media to make the series as timely and relevant as ever.
[A]n action-packed instalment full of close calls, shocking killings and treachery . . . as Blackman expertly weaves together all the threads from the series to form a satisfying if bittersweet conclusion. [A] fitting end to an incredible series, and will make readers want to return to the first book all over again.

Two things spoilt this a little bit - one being meggies accent, and the other being calis last chapter where she talks to Troy about her and tobeys relationship and sephys last words I’ve got to say I’m not sure I understood everyone’s feelings at the conclusion, it was a little messy.

A great series with a not so great ending.

The book appeared a bit slow however finished good. I liked the way it reminded me of the other books prior in keeping with this story.

Nothing beats a good family

Loved the final installment of the series, which yet again draws parallels with the real world with artfulness and nuance.
Great performances all round, although not necessarily consistent with the previous audio book characterisations.

My only criticism is that Meggie was given a Caribbean accent (must probably because she's first encountered after having cooked plantain and fishcakes, so an assumption was made), despite the fact that she is a naught and this is critical to her character.

Excellent story, brought to life beautifully

I love this as a strong end to a good series.

I would have been a full 5⭐ on everything but I can't get over the choice of voice for Meggie. I know that Caribbean accent could belong to someone of any skin colour but the fact Meggie is a nought (white) is so important, to her characterisation and to the earlier books especially, that it feels like the narrator didn't know the earlier books before narrating which broke the immersion for me.

A strong ending

So ... there's going to be another book. We have to know how Calli will save Toby.

My only... qualm is when Troy was speaking and quoting nana Meggie, he had a Jamaican/ Caribbean accent. which confused me since she was a nought (white) and that accent had never been put on her throughout the series until then...

not saying you can't be white and have that accent, more like it seemed out of character given her history

love... but...
