Naoki Higashida

Naoki Higashida was born in Kimitsu, Japan in 1992. Diagnosed with severe autism when he was five, he subsequently learnt how to communicate using a handmade alphabet grid and began to write poems and short stories. Then, at the age of thirteen, he wrote THE REASON I JUMP: ONE BOY'S VOICE FROM THE SILENCE OF AUTISM. First published in Japan in 2007, its English translation came out in 2013 and was an immediate No 1 Sunday Times bestseller in the UK. It went on to be a New York Times bestseller in the US and has now been published in over 30 languages. Higashida has published a further twenty books in Japan since, including children’s and picture books, poems and essays, and in 2014 was the subject of an award-winning Japanese television documentary, What You Taught Me About My Son. He has also participated in conferences about autism throughout Japan and generally works to raise awareness of the condition. FALL DOWN SEVEN TIMES, GET UP EIGHT was published in Japan in 2014, and in 2017 by Sceptre.
