James began his career as a Submariner in the Royal Navy—arguably the best free management training on the planet. After a few fulfilling years spent mostly underwater, he decided it might be nice to occasionally see daylight. So, following an epic eighteen-month notice period, he left the Navy and went in search of his wife (last seen somewhere in Kent, in a house he vaguely remembered buying). While navigating his own job search, James stumbled into executive search. Starting as a researcher, he worked his way up—through two start-ups, two business turnarounds, a PLC, a venture-capital-fueled rocket ship, and a lot of hard-earned experience. Along the way came one divorce, the installation of Wife v2.0 (complete with two delightful pre-installed apps), and a shift in direction—from executive search into broader business consulting focused on talent. Two decades flew by. Realizing people wouldn’t take him seriously without a business card, he launched JCM Advisors, an international talent management and business consulting firm. While he still partners with leadership teams at top professional services firms, JCM’s mission now centers on helping smaller, fast-growing companies and entrepreneurs avoid the same mistakes James (and many others) once made. Today, James is CEO of two other companies he’s invested in, serves as a Non-Executive Director and Advisor to several more, and speaks regularly at conferences and seminars. When not working, he retreats to East Sussex or spends time volunteering with local and national humanitarian charities. Disclaimer: James is not a trained psychologist, counsellor, or certified mentor. He holds no formal credentials—just a lifetime of experience packed with more lessons than most people could fit into three.
