Joan Druett is the author of many award-winning books, both fiction and non-fiction, including "Island of the Lost," which has become an enduring classic in the survival genre. Another wellknown book is "Tupaia," the biography of an astonishingly brilliant Tahitian priest and navigator, who sailed with Captain Cook. This won the NZ Post Best Non-fiction Book award.

She is also known for books about women under sail, including "Hen Frigates," "Petticoat Whalers," and "She Was a Sister Sailor," all of which have received awards. While researching this fascinating aspect of maritime history, she was the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, which involved five months of research in New England, Virginia, California, and Hawaii. This was followed by a three-year Fellowship in Orient, Long Island, and her participation in a prize-winning exhibit, “The Sailing Circle," which received substantial funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. This project won the highly prestigious Albert Corey Award.

Back in New Zealand, Joan was awarded a Stout Fellowship at Victoria University, Wellington, in an acknowledgement of her established strength in rigorous historical research presented through accessible human storytelling.
