I have never done a biography which relied exclusively on the written record, as biographers must if their subject died a long time ago. So far, everyone I've written about lived in the recent past. It gives you the sense of living another life - and it makes you think a lot about memory, and how people remember. Memories become overlaid with stories and interpretations over the years, it's inevitable, and no story is ever told in the same way twice.
