About this listen
Eighteen years ago, Henry Asquith, Duke of Avesbury had to leave his kept lover, Kit Redford, in order to devote himself to raising his young family. Now, a lifetime later, his children are moving on and, for the first time in years, Henry is alone.
During a rare visit to London, Henry unexpectedly happens upon an old friend of Kit’s and learns that Kit did not receive the financial pay off he was entitled to when Henry left him. Instead, Kit was thrown out of his home and left destitute. Horrified, Henry begs Kit to see him and allow Henry to compensate him. But Kit, who now owns a discreet club for gentlemen of a certain persuasion, neither needs nor wants Henry’s money.
“Perhaps you should earn the money you owe me the way I had to earn it? On your knees, and on your back, taking my cock like a whore.”
Kit thought he had put his old hurts and grievances about Henry behind him, but when he sees Henry again, he discovers that, not only is the old pain still there, so is the fierce attraction that once burned between them. When, in a moment of fury, Kit demands a scandalous form of penance from Henry, no one is more surprised than Kit when Henry agrees to pay it. As Kit and Henry spend more time together, they learn more about the men they have become, and about the secret feelings and desires they concealed from one another in the past. Henry realises he wants to build a future with Kit, but can he persuade his wary lover to trust him ever again? And can two men from such different worlds make a new life together?

With 18 years since Henry broke Kit's heart I thought this would be more angsty than it was and honestly that was a pleasant surprise. There's plenty of plot and lovely reconciliation.
Narrator does an excellent job. His vocal style really suits historical stories.

From the very first chapters, I knew this story was going to be something special. Kit and Henry's youthful, passionate arrangement seemed casual on the outside, but was layered with so much hidden devotion and love that I almost couldn't stand it. When circumstances forced them apart in such an unexpectedly devastating way, I ached for what could have been. Every detail I found out about those years "in-between" tore at my heart, over and over again. An awful betrayal of trust led to so much pain, emotional and physical, for these men, that by the time they stumbled across each other again, I didn't know if there was any way to make it right. Every interaction Henry and Kit had in this story was so emotionally charged that I was practically trembling with the desire to see what would happen. While there weren't a ton of steamy encounters in this book, the moments these two did have were so explosive and exciting and wildly consuming that it was well worth the wait. Though I could have easily been entertained by the romantic reconnection alone, the unfolding of events involving Mr. Sharp, Freddy, and Clara added plenty of suspense and action to this otherwise swoony story. All together, this ended up being such a romantic second-chance at love for Kit and Henry, and I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed it!
Utterly delightful

Eighteen years earlier, Kit Redford had been a ‘kept man’, the lover of Henry, Duke of Avebury. Almost a year into their arrangement, both men have realised that they have begun to feel more for each other than is wise. Kit is a courtesan and Henry is a duke (and a married duke at that) and knowing that love was never supposed to be part of their agreement, neither man says anything about how he feels.
When Henry’s wife – who is also his best friend and mother of his four children – gives Henry the awful news that she’s terminally ill, she asks to leave London immediately in order to spend her remaining time with her family at the country estate – and Henry can’t deny her. The only demands she’s ever made of him are that he cease to visit her bed after their fourth child was born and that he be discreet about finding his pleasure elsewhere – and even though Henry can’t help thinking of Kit and wanting to explain his sudden departure, he makes the arrangements to leave straight away, safe in the knowledge that he’s left instructions to ensure that Kit will be well taken care of.
Henry remained in the country after his wife died and devoted himself to his children. Now, though, almost two decades later, they’re grown, and Henry realises he has a lonely road ahead as they forge lives of their own. A rare trip to London finds him thinking of Kit for the first time in years - and when he learns that far from being well taken care of, Kit was left almost destitute when he they parted ways, he’s horrified. Even after learning that Kit is now a successful businessman, Henry’s conscience insists he try to make amends – if he can persuade Kit to see him.
RESTORED is a gorgeous second-chance romance which brilliantly charts the journey its protagonists take to find their way back to each other both physically and emotionally. Old resentments and hurts are faced openly, bringing a new honesty and awareness of the inequality of their old dynamic, and Henry longs for the chance to convince Kit that they can have something different, something real where they can come together as equals with nothing between them but honesty and love.
Simon Goldhill delivers a beautifully nuanced, thoughtful performance which perfectly suits the reflective nature of the story. His interpretation of the two leads is spot on – Henry is authoritative and considered but softly spoken, and while Henry is clearly not a man who expresses emotion easily, the strength of his feelings for Kit come through very strongly. Kit’s brighter and more overtly expressive voice is a great fit for him as a generally upbeat personality, and the emotional connection between the pair is superbly communicates to the listener.
RESTORED is a poignant, emotional and immensely satisfying tale of two people finding one another again and choosing to make a life together on their own terms.

I enjoyed seeing how they’d both grown, how they’d struggled but triumphed, and how they were both decent people who sometimes made mistakes or had unfortunate things happen. I liked both their families (and many of the other side characters, including the parrot, lol), who brought the story even more to life.
The feelings Henry and Kit have for one another are so very vivid, even when they’re terrible at acknowledging or expressing them.
Simon did a lovely job narrating. It was so nice that hear the British accent (which doesn’t come out if I’m reading it, lol).
Really looking forward to George’s story!
I received an ARC from GRR. This is my honest review.
