I am voluntarily writing this honest review after listening to a #gifted ALC of this novel via Valentine PR. All opinions expressed are my own. Luscious, by Lexi Blake, is the first book in the spin-off series Masters and Mercenaries: Topped. Macon Miles lost his leg, his military career, and his wife after an IED explosion in Afghanistan. His estranged brother moved him to Dallas and got him a job as a pastry chef in his friend’s restaurant, Topped. Allyson Jones made her foster mother a promise on her death bed that she would find out what happened to her foster brother, Ronnie. She was convinced that Macon was withholding information, and followed him to Texas where she got a job at the same restaurant. When circumstances threw the two together, their chemistry was combustible and Macon introduced Ally to the world of BDSM. When her secrets were revealed, would they be able to get back the love they lost? I really enjoyed listening to this seven hour long novella. The narrator, Lance Greenfield, did a really good job narrating this spicy, open door, third person, dual POV audiobook. His narration style is expressive and easy listening. I enjoyed this look back in the past to stories of the parents of the characters in the Masters and Mercenaries: New Recruits spin-off, and there were appearances by many of the characters who make that series so delightful as well as early glimpses of the new recruits as young children. This contemporary romantic suspense novella was originally published in 2015 and released in audio in 2023. It includes tropes such as BDSM, Veteran MMC, FMC in foster care, secrets, close proximity, found family and workplace romance. This was a short love story which ended somewhat abruptly, but was well written. I enjoyed Mason and Ally and the way they fit into the Masters and Mercenaries community. If you enjoy funny, spicy, romantic suspense then this might be an audiobook for you.

Macon’s last military mission resulted in the loss of his leg and ended his marriage as well. He is struggling to find a path forward until Adam, his brother, finds out what happens and brings him home with him. He is now working at Top, the restaurant owned by Sean Taggart, when Allyson starts working there as well.

Allyson has a reason for working at Top and it is to try to find the answers that she believes that Macon has about her brother’s death. When she gets to know Macon she realizes that he is a good man and that is the only truth she needs to know but secrets have a way of coming out in the worst possible way.

Both Allyson and Macon bear the emotional scars of the past which doesn’t always allow them to make the best choices. The heat and feelings between them are undeniable as they both help each other heal from the past. Lance Greenfield does a wonderful job of narrating story and allows you to experience the emotions that they were feelings as well as the camaraderie with the rest of the characters.
