Summary

When Mrs. Dashwood is forced by an avaricious daughter-in-law to leave the family home in Sussex, she takes her three daughters to live in a modest cottage in Devon. For Elinor, the eldest daughter, the move means a painful separation from the man she loves, but her sister Marianne finds in Devon the romance and excitement which she longs for. The contrasting fortunes and temperaments of the two girls as they struggle to cope in their different ways with the cruel events which fate has in store for them are portrayed by Jane Austen with her usual irony, humour, and profound sensibility.

Well as we know it is a classic

Jane Austen enlightens us on the difficulties of being a women of gentility without the possibility of a fortune to back it up. A good read

Juliet Stevenson is brilliant!

A tail of contrast with the wit and observation of the unrivalled Jane Austin. Read the tail of romantic love as the struggle of the rational against hyperbole, academia versus tabloids, the real world versus Donald Trump and it remains relevant and fresh.

Standard Stuff

Yet another old book which focuses on how much wealth each character has and which young lady will marry which young gentleman. In this case, the prime interest revolves around Mrs. Dashwood's two elder daughters, Elinor (19) and Marianne (17). . . . . . . . . . . . . . For me there were too many words and no action. I suppose those able to appreciate such things might regard this as fine writing. I really did like the excellent reading by Juliet Stevenson, she almost brought the book to life.

Unsuitable for men

What a load of awful twaddle, avoid like the plague why is Jane Austen so popular ? Juliet Stevenson does her best to breath some live into the turgid proceedings but fails.

Takes A While To Get Going

This is an interesting twisty plot with a lot of character insight and comment on the times but it isn't P&P and it's a little unsatisfying in places.

Another great Jane Austin novel

Sense and Sensibility was a lovely story, Jane Austin really makes you feel like you are living back in the old world amongst her characters. This book was a little slow to start but after a few chapters I was hooked and couldn't wait to hear what happened next. There are many twists and an interesting insight into their way of life, beautifully written.
