Summary

When Catherine Morland, a country clergyman's daughter, is invited to spend a season in Bath with the fashionable high society, little does she imagine the delights and perils that await her. Captivated and disconcerted by what she finds, and introduced to the joys of "Gothic novels" by her new friend, Isabella, Catherine longs for mystery and romance. When she is invited to stay with the beguiling Henry Tilney and his family at Northanger Abbey, she expects mystery and intrigue at every turn. However, the truth turns out to be even stranger than fiction.

Classic tale, excellently narrated!

Thoroughly enjoyable rendition of this Jane Austen classic, by Juliet Stevenson. Read in a smooth, engaging way, with excellent character parts. Particularly enjoyed the comic characters performed with farce relish!

Beautifully read...

As always, Juliet Stevenson is a pleasure to listen to and, if this were any other author, I'd have given 5*. However, NA is my least favourite of Austen's works. While I enjoy the knowing tone and parody of the gothic novels of the day, I've never been able to warm to Catherine or feel the love between her and Henry Tilney the way I do with characters in her other books.

My favourite Narrator, brought the story alive

Ok, I wasn't a big fan of the story when I read it first but I think it changed I listened to this audiobook. I enjoyed it immensely and Juliet Stevenson is the best narrator ever. Thank you Ms Stevenson for the well nuanced reading. At first like others I did feel that Catherine sounded a bit too childish but she sounded more mature as the story progressed and her growth of character with exposure to the world around her.
Just a note, the chapters are wrong , they are combined together. But the book is whole, no issue there and worked well as whisper sync.

I love all Jane Austen’s books and this one was read so perfectly by Juliet Stevenson. Faultless and a complete joy to me.

A masterpiece

In this Jane Austen has created one of the most beautiful books in the English language, and Juliet Stevenson is probably once of the only people in the world that could ha e done it justice. I will listen to this again and again!

Juliette Stevenson reads beautifully...

I love this book, but if you want to listen to it then this one is a must. Juliette Stevenson just has a way of letting you sink into the book and enjoy it too, she has a skill not all narrators possess. A must read.

Entertaining, but not her best novel

As always, Juliet Steveson's performance was superb. However, it is several decades since I read this novel and I had forgotten much of the story. I love Jane Austen, but this is definitely not her best novel.
