When you sell your soul, the devil gives no refunds....

When an old man is burned alive in a sleepy ex-mining village, Detective Chief Inspector Ryan is called in to investigate. He soon discovers that, beneath the facade of a close-knit community, the burn from decades-old betrayal still smoulders. When everyone had a motive, can he unravel the secrets of the past before the killer strikes again?

Meanwhile, back at Northumbria CID, trouble is brewing with rumours of a mole in Ryan’s department. With everyone under suspicion, can he count on anybody but himself?

Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape.

I'm a big fan of LJ Ross and the DCI Ryan series. Each book has been superb, but I think the bar has been further raised by Penshaw. Largely a follow on from The Moor (book 12), Penshaw is deeply absorbing, with some superb plot lines, edge of your seat intrigue and some spellbinding interplay between the main characters. I think Phillips is just my favourite fictional character - period!
Can't recommend this and the rest of the DCI Ryan series enough.
Jonathan Keeble does a magnificent job narrating, as he has done through the entire series. I can't wait for the next installment.

Wow, simply brilliant...

This was a brilliant story, I love the way LJ reminds us of previous storylines in this series. I so wanted to find out what had happened to the detective, after the last book in series. Just hope the next book is in process ,of being written and will not be too long.

This was fantastic.
