Criminal barrister Charles Holborne may have just escaped the hangman by proving he was framed for murder, but his life is now in ruins. His wife is dead, his high-flying career has morphed into criminal notoriety, and bankruptcy threatens. When the biggest brief of Charles' career unexpectedly lands on his desk, it looks as if he has been thrown a lifeline. But far from keeping him afloat, it drags him ever deeper into the shadowy underworld of 1960s London. Now, not only is his practice at stake, but his very life. Can Charles extricate himself from a chess game played from the shadows by corrupt police officers and warring gangs without once again turning to crime himself?

Based on real Old Bailey cases and genuine court documents, An Honest Man is the second in the series of Charles Holborne novels by barrister Simon Michael, set in the sleazy London of the 1960s.

This is the very first time I felt the need to write a brief review and if I'm honest these words are more about the narrator than the author who however is pretty damn good and writes a great tale, but a bad or average reader can completely destroy even the most accomplished writing, and I have been an avid audio book listener for many years now both on Audible and previously through my local library...certainly not the case with Colin Mace who reads with consummate skill bringing each character to life with a tremendous performance..... 'voice acting' at it's very highest ...Thank you Mr Mace you are a wonder!

This is the second of the series which I listened to and it was excellent. The time of the Krays and casual anti semitism in this era is shocking and dramatic background to the story. I enjoyed the detail of courtroom procedure and believable dialogue. The story leads on from the first novel but is explained sufficiently to catch on to any significant details so the books need not be heard in order.
