곽재식은 누구보다도 재미난 이야기 소재들을 사랑하는 작가입니다. 비단 SF뿐만 아니라 동서양의 판타지와 전설 등, 현실 밖의 꿈과 상상과 환상 속에 담긴 이야기들을 찾고 수집하죠. 다루는 소재를 고려하면, 곽재식은 확실히 '장르 소설가'에 속합니다. 전형적이라고 할 수도 있겠죠. 하지만 이 작가는 특별합니다. 현재 장르 소설계에서 이렇게 웃긴 작가는 존재하지 않습니다. 특히 이공계를 졸업하고 사회에 진출한 사람들이 겪는 부조리한 사회생활에 관한 블랙 코미디는 타의 추종을 불허합니다. 그 기반은 '리얼리티'죠. 대사 하나하나가 진짜 리얼합니다. 코믹 SF의 예로 코니 윌리스를 들어보면, 코니 윌리스는 극의 희극성을 끌어올리기 위해 일부러 비현실적인 캐릭터를 등장시킵니다. 단점은 아니고 전략적인 방향 설정이죠. 대체로 현실은 그만큼 재미가 있지는 않으니까요. 그런데 곽재식이 쓰는 설정이나 대사는 너무 리얼합니다. 말도 안 되는 소리들을 하고 있는데, 그게 너무 리얼합니다. 사회에서 갑을관계를 겪어 봤거나, 특히 공무원들과 대화를 해 본 분들이라면 이 소설에 나오는 처음 보는 캐릭터들의 대사를 읽을 때 육성이 들려올 겁니다.
