Dragon Fairy Tales

George MacDonald, described by W.H. Auden as "one of the most remarkable writers of the 19th century", was valued in his own time as an original thinker and spiritual guide. Of all his writing, it is the fairy tales that have retained their fascination, and this collection includes all 11 stories. The fairy tales feature the stock characters of traditional tales—fairies both good and bad, and children undertaking precarious journeys. Often adopting paradox and nonsense as Lewis Carroll did, the stories invite adults to deploy the same open-mindedness as children.

Even though young Arthur pulled a sword from a stone and became King of England, he just doesn't feel like a king. Old Merlin tells him a story of fighting dragons, clashing armies, and Merlin's own youth and prophetic dreams. The wizard's story teaches Arthur about trusting in himself and inspires an "ordinary" boy to have the courage to rise to greatness.

Here is a collection of four delightful dragon stories by two master writers for children: "The Reluctant Dragon" by Kenneth Grahame and "The Island of the Nine Whirlpools", "The Fiery Dragon", and "The Last Dragon" by Edith Nesbit. Presented with lively music and even the occasional amusing sound effect.

The Boy lives in a cottage with his mother and father, and the Dragon lives in a cave on the Downs. The Boy is his only friend. The Dragon is not at all the sort of Dragon one might expect to meet, however: he's polite and friendly.

The northern mountain village offers protection from the threat of dragons, but is a difficult place, especially for a misfit like Jason Dreshen. His days are spent hunting for food for his family, praying for warmth, and trying to hide his strange silver eye that grants him dragon sight. When a stranger visits during the local Freedom Festival searching for a different kind of dragon, everything changes.

On the night of Samhain, when the fairy world and our own drift a little closer together, fairy sisters Willa and Violet are in for a Halloween fright they'll never forget. A monster in the closet. A baby dragon under the bed. As screams turn to giggles and one very mischievous black cat keeps everyone guessing, the sisters discover that the scariest things are rarely what they seem. Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is open the door anyway.

Monsters, mystery, and magic abound in this stunning, illustrated collection of original fairy tales from the World of Warcraft universe, as told by an all-star cast of best-selling, award-winning storytellers.

In 1663, Oshun was summoned by Queen Aimee as she lay dying in the rice fields. A high priestess in her homeland of Angola, Queen Aimee was captured and sold to a plantation on a sea island off the coast of Georgia. Beaten, starved, and worked to death Queen Aimee prayed that the Goddess would save her child. Oshun answered her call, sweeping a yellow fever across the island that ravaged the cruel masters and their overseers.

Many of the stories in this book seem at the same time both familiar and strange. Their authors valued family, duty, patience and heroism. They longed for children in their old age, and rejoiced when they saw cruelty and envy punished, wrongs righted, and kindness and bravery rewarded. These...
