The very idea of empire was created in ancient Rome, and even today, traces of its monuments, literature, and institutions can be found across Europe, the Near East, and North Africa - and sometimes even further afield. Hannibal is often considered the finest general the world has ever known. The year 146 BC marked the brutal end to the Roman Republic's 118-year struggle for the western Mediterranean.
