Ulf and his shield brothers are sent on a raid against an old enemy — Francia, a mighty kingdom to the south, now ravaged by civil war. During the perilous sea voyage, Ulf can only focus on one thing. He demands closure: to find the man who slaughtered his family — Griml.

Bruised and battered from a disastrous raid, Ulf and his companions are set to return to their home. But the gods have other ideas. A violent sea storm pushes them back onto the treacherous land of Francia. With their ship damaged, Ulf and his Norse brothers are left stranded.

His family has been avenged and all he wants is peace. But the gods are not done with Ulf yet. Four years after being banished from Vestfold, Ulf Bear-Slayer Bjornson tries to live a life as a trader. But the peace he had hoped to find after avenging his family still eludes him. Plagued by his temper, Ulf gets into a drunken fight with Ragnar Lothbrok and is forced to flee Jelling, the royal seat of the king of Denmark. Pursued and outnumbered, he makes a mistake that nearly costs him his life.
