Being possessed has its advantages.... Sure, my soul-bound familiar could be a pain in the ass, but she came with some pretty impressive abilities. A nasty voodoo demigod, a loa of destruction, wants to steal her power. Ogoun, the loa of war, has invited me to join the Voodoo Academy. If I master the arts, he tells me that I might have a chance to thwart the demigod's scheme. But can any of these "gods" be trusted? They all have ulterior motives. And I won't be a pawn in their war. But if I don't stop him, if he steals these powers...he could destroy the world.

Annabelle Mulledy survived a Voodoo attack on her family as a child — but it left her possessed by the spirit of a nearly 200-year-old girl. This girl, however, came with strange abilities bestowed upon her in the afterlife. When Kalfu, an evil Loa, discovers Annabelle, he hopes to use her abilities to his advantage — to escape the spiritual realm and take a corporeal form. When Ogoun, the Loa of War, intervenes, he recruits Annabelle to join him as a student at the Voodoo Academy. Will Annabelle master the arts and fend off Kalfu’s spiritual assaults?

Annabelle Mulledy survived Kalfu’s attack - one friend saved, another lost in Guinee. But now the vampires are on the rise. Most of them, she can handle without much trouble. But when an ancient, more powerful vampire confronts her - one who is uncomfortably familiar to her - and his apprentice joins her at the Voodoo Academy, she finds she has little choice. Help this vampire arrest and overpower death itself, or risk seeing her sister and parents irrevocably “turned” themselves. 

Kalfu has taken a host. Lives have been lost. Most blame Annabelle. If the Academy - and all of Vilokan - is going to stand against Kalfu, they must find a way to unite. Headmistress Erzulie has evoked the Voodoo Trials. A new High Hougan or Mambo must be chosen to unite the Academy’s five colleges. But when Annabelle discovers the true purpose of the Trials, she must make an impossible choice - either compete to win and divide Vilokan further, or risk unleashing an evil that will destroy the Voodoo world from within.

 Vilokan has fallen. The surviving students and Loa of the Voodoo Academy are dispersed, and on the run. The souls of the dead linger beneath the broken firmament. To stand against Kalfu, Annabelle’s only hope is to recover a lost relic, once belonging to Agwe, the Voodoo Lord of the Seas. But the underwater world is a perilous place full of sea serpents, insidious spirits, and even zombie sharks. 

The Voodoo world needs a new queen. The bokors have united behind Kalfu. The magical war that Ogoun had predicted has begun. Mercy’s vampire coven is growing—but which side of this war are they really on? When Annabelle returns from Agwe’s oceanic domain, she finds the remnants of Vilokan hiding in fear for their lives.
