Edward McKendree Bounds (1835-1913) was an author, attorney, and Methodist pastor. In The Weapon of Prayer, Bounds explains the necessity and the realities of prayer. Charles Grandison Finney (1792-1875) was a Presbyterian minister and a leader of the Second Great Awakening in the United States. He has been called “The Father of Modern Revivalism”. Referring constantly to scripture in "The Secret of Guidance", Meyer calls on believers to examine their inner motives, to consider how they ought to be receptive to God’s guidance. The book emphasizes spiritual formation and the practical application of Christian precepts in daily life.

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837-1899) was an evangelist, author, and publisher associated with the Holiness Movement. In How to Study the Bible, he discusses the reasons why Bible study is so important for Christians. Recognizing the differences between individuals, he offers a variety of different methods for doing so. There are sections on observation, interpretation and application of the texts and the author also offers the tools for understanding the difficult passages in the scriptures.

John Owen (1616 - 1683) was vice chancellor of Oxford University and served as advisor to Oliver Cromwell. The Death of Death in the Death of Christ is a polemical work, attempting to prove, among other things, that the doctrine of universal redemption is unscriptural. It is divided into four parts. The first sets forth his thesis that the work of Christ on the cross was made for the full and complete salvation of those whom God intended to save.

The Holy War Made by King Shaddai Upon Diabolus, or, The Losing and Taking Again of the Town of Mansoul is a 1682 novel by John Bunyan. Written in the form of an allegory, it tells the story of the town Mansoul which rebels against king Shaddai, replacing his benign rule with that of Diabolus who turns out to be a harmful ruler. The king sends his son Emmanuel to reclaim the city. Salvation can come to the city only by the victory of Emmanuel.

This 1754 work by Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is subtitled An Inquiry into the Modern Prevailing Notions of the Freedom of the Will Which Is Supposed to Be Essential to Moral Agency, Virtue and Vice, Reward and Punishment, Praise and Blame. Edwards was a Christian reformer, theologian, and author in the Calvinist tradition, and in this work he explores the necessity of divine grace for the redeeming of the damaged will of humanity. He contends that free will is an extension of, and connected to, the grace of God.
