Jacques Lacan was a French psychoanalyst who spent forty years saying difficult things on purpose. He claimed the unconscious is structured like a language, that desire is never your own, that the self you think you are is mostly a trick of the mirror, and that the love you feel for another person is at best, a useful misunderstanding. He drew diagrams that looked like macramé. He wrote books that read like crossword puzzles set on fire. He died in 1981 and refused, even then, to make himself clear. This book is for the listener who has never heard of him and is not entirely sure they want to.
