"Nightmare Town" is among the more popular short novels by Dashiell Hammett, who was at the top of his writing game when this story was first published in 1924. The story presents a seemingly ordinary town - Izzard, Arizona - whose social order is deeply distorted by crime, deception, and...

Dashiell Hammett is universally regarded as one of the finest American writers of "hard boiled" detective fiction and his short stories and novels have been hailed as some of the best mystery stories ever written. Hammett would doubtless have gone down in literary history simply for his creation of the detective Sam Spade ("The Maltese Falcon") as well as Nick and Nora Charles ("The Thin Man" series), but he is also the creator of another of the most popular detectives in fiction: the nameless private investigator known as the Continental Op, who appears in dozens of his stories.

In 1924, Dashiell Hammett—considered the father of hard-boiled detective fiction - wrote two short stories in his Continental Op series of mysteries: "The House on Turk Street" and "The Girl with the Silver Eyes." Rather than create two stand-alone stories, however, Hammett instead sends the Continental Op into a maze of stolen bonds, missing women, criminal rivalries, and lethal betrayals, all of which lead him to the mysterious, red-headed vixen named "Elvira," an elusive, intelligent, and dangerously charismatic woman who manipulates everyone around her while preserving her own secrets.

Until Dante’s son discovers a secret that could be Cangrande’s undoing. Suddenly thrust into the schemes and betrayals surrounding Verona’s prince, Pietro Alighieri must navigate a rivalry that severs a friendship, divides a city, and sparks a feud that will produce Shakespeare’s famous star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet.

Eight years after the tumultuous events of The Master of Verona, Pietro Alaghieri is living in exile in Ravenna, enduring the loss of his famous father while secretly raising Cesco, the bastard heir to Verona's prince, Cangrande della Scala. Suddenly word of Cangrande's death reaches him, forcing Pietro to race back to Verona and prevent Cesco's rivals from usurping his ward's rightful place. But young Cesco is determined not to be anyone's pawn. Willful and brilliant, he defies even the stars.

Among the more popular of the Continental Op stories, Dashiell Hammett's "Corkscrew" follows the Op on an unusual mission. He is dispatched to Corkscrew, Arizona, a scorching border town where murders, smuggling, and lawlessness have overwhelmed the local authorities. Hired by worried landowners...

"The Whosis Kid" by Dashiell Hammett is a gritty detective story featuring the Continental Op, a hard-boiled private investigator navigating a world of crime, deceit, and shifting loyalties. The story follows the Op as he tracks down a notorious criminal known as the Whosis Kid, a slippery figure whose identity and motives remain elusive. Set against Hammett's trademark backdrop of corruption and moral ambiguity, the tale unfolds with sharp dialogue, terse prose, and a relentless pace.

"Zigzags of Treachery" is a hard-boiled story by Dashiell Hammett featuring his unnamed, legendary detective known as the Continental Op. The book is set in San Francisco, where the Op is hired to investigate the suspicious death of Dr. Estep, a respected surgeon with a secretive past.
