Kenneth Rose was one of the most astute observers of the establishment for over 70 years. The wry and amusing journals of the royal biographer and historian made objective observation a sculpted craft. His impeccable social placement located him within the beating heart of the national elite for decades. He was capable of writing substantial history, such as his priceless material on the abdication crisis from conversations with both the Duke of Windsor and the Queen Mother.

The foundation of the eco-conscious home was made with car and truck tires filled with dirt. It was one of a few places to vacation if you wanted to bang dirt into tires. Along with the foundation, guests helped build an outdoor patio, stacking the tires, pounding dirt into them and pouring concrete to bind them. Other visitors to this homestead ate fresh produce and herbs from a greenhouse attached to the side of the home like a glass rib cage. One couple came to experience the subzero temperatures of a Finger Lakes winter in a home made of trash. Every guest had this in common: They came for a taste of living on a homestead.

"For Taste of Farm Life, There’s No Place Like a Homestead" is from the January 22, 2017 Travel section of The New York Times. It was written by Kenneth R. Rosen and narrated by Kristi Burns.

Ken Rosen argues that successful real estate investors do not get rich in an up market. They get rich and stay rich by investing in real estate for the long-run. And, in fact, they view market downturns as opportunities.

Painted to imitate a big top circus tent, the mailbox on Jenny Vidbel’s property hints at the lives she cares for on her farm in the Catskill Mountains. Down in the fields, a group of horses convened at the edge of woodland during a recent visit. From her house, Vidbel monitored them and a variety of the animals roaming about 70 acres. She is a third-generation circus trainer and the overseer of recently arrived retirees — more than two dozen horses, a few pigs and a rowdy cluster of dogs from the Big Apple Circus.
