In Monsieur Lecoq, two men are found dead at a bar in a seedy area of Paris, and a third man, wounded, stands in the doorway and dies shortly afterwards. To the Inspector of Police, the case seems straightforward – a pub brawl that ended in murder – but Lecoq is unconvinced and is permitted to investigate further with the help of an older officer, Father Absinthe. In the course of his investigations – which take an ever-tortuous direction – Lecoq is assisted by the ‘armchair’ detective Tabaret.

When the heirs to Cosmo Mornington’s enormous fortune are nowhere to be found, Don Luis Perenna, a friend of the deceased and executor of his will, sets out to track them down. If he fails to do so, he will himself inherit a quarter of his friend’s fortune. It is not long before one of the heirs turns up dead and the search for the missing beneficiaries quickly becomes a murder investigation.

Dating from the last decade of the 19th century, Pelléas et Mélisande points the way into the 20th century. The score is hauntingly beautiful, but there is more to the work than shifting panels of elusive, impressionistic sound. Debussy retains the text of Maeterlinck’s play, and the linguistic subtleties of the French text are matched perfectly by the musical detail. Taking a little time to explore the romantic, elusive world of this opera is particularly rewarding.

When Arsène Lupin and two of his criminal associates try to rob the villa of Deputy Daubrecq, things do not go according to plan and Lupin’s two partners are arrested and sentenced to death, leaving him to try and save them from the guillotine. To achieve this, Lupin must not only evade Daubrecq but also outwit a ruthless blackmailer who holds incriminating evidence in a crystal stopper.

Die Fledermaus is one of the few operatic works to which the phrase "never a dull moment" can be truthfully applied. From the explosive opening of the famous overture - reminiscent of a volley of champagne corks - through the surging energy of the "Fledermaus Waltz" and the many comic numbers, of which the accelerando trio is the finest, up to such huge concerted numbers as the "Duidu" finale to Act II, this is an operetta which almost incarnates nostalgia. Thomson Smillie and David Timson infuse their exploration of Die Fledermaus with as much life as the operetta itself.

Why is Mrs. Maberley offered a handsome price for the Three Gables, provided she leaves at once and takes nothing with her?
