An isolated, high mountain village of indigenous people called the Mokie lose their shaman. With no shaman to guide them, the people abandon their traditional ways, and the young people cross the mountains to settle in the cities on the other side. The Mokie left behind mourn their loss and pray for a new shaman to come to their aid so the children will stay home. The Mokie stay hopeless until a blizzard blows a black crow and a stranger into their village. Is the stranger the new shaman they need?

The following three tales are adapted from stories told by the American Indians. These are three of my favorite coyote stories. They are: "The Story of Coyote, Buffalo, and the Rock", told by the Sioux, a tribe from the Northwest, where they once formed the Great Sioux Nation, in the area that later became the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Montana, and Wyoming.

Before he goes out on another bounty hunt, Charlie wants a long soak in a hot bath, a bottle of whiskey, and the pleasure of a woman's company. He has two out of three when a school marm with cornflower-blue eyes invades his privacy. After Charlie makes it clear he only works for pay, Miss Parker offers him one night of sexual favors in exchange for his tracking services. Though he knows bedding a white woman will cause all kinds of trouble, he operates on the philosophy that a bird in hand is better than no bird at all.

The Narrows of Fear (Wapawikoscikanik) navigates the unsettling, but necessary. When love of, and respect for, culture goes awry, it is our indigenous women who bring us back to what is important. This novel is an interweaving of stories centered on a range of characters, both male and female, though the women, for the most part, are the healers. Though several were abused both in their own community and in residential schools, these women are smart and loving and committed to helping one another.
