Anxiety, depression, and their dangerous manifestations - substance abuse, eating disorders, self-injury, and suicide - are increasing student conditions at many competitive high schools. Paradoxically, most of these schools promote themselves as being committed to students' holistic development in academics, athletics, and the arts, and in their personal, social, and emotional growth. So why are so many students struggling?

Teaching is becoming increasingly difficult. No, there's a better way to put it. Our precious profession is unpredictable. Each year is more challenging than the last. Students are more unhinged under the influence of influencers who subscribe to selfishness and irresponsibility. Parents, whether affluent or under the influence, have yet to develop a real sense of cooperation with the humans who agreed to build a solid academic foundation for their children. Yet, these are only some of the worst obstacles teachers must navigate.
