Pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1919, "Berecche e la guerra" verrà poi inserita da Pirandello in "Novelle per un anno". Pirandello ci presenta la storia del Prof. Berecche, studioso e cultore della Germania, che dovrà confrontarsi con il dramma e l'insensatezza della Prima Guerra Mondiale.

Pubblicata per la prima volta nell'agosto del 1915 sul Giornale di Sicilia, "Colloquii coi personaggi" è una novella in cui possiamo ascoltare lo stesso Pirandello mentre dialoga con un personaggio e con il ricordo della madre defunta. Ambientata allo scoppio della Prima Guerra Mondiale, la novella presenta un'interessante riflessione sui doveri dell'intellettuale e su quelli dell'autore.
