Darla Sims left her hometown of Whale Harbor years ago to pursue a career as an artist in New York City. But after a disastrous art show that leaves her questioning everything, she receives even more devastating news: her beloved grandmother has passed away, and she needs to return home for the funeral. Going back to Whale Harbor wasn't in her plans, and from the moment Darla sets foot in the small coastal town where she grew up, her life is turned on its head.

She's one of the most beloved residents of Whale Harbor... and one of the loneliest. Although it's been several years since her husband's death, schoolteacher Gabrielle Watson has never truly found her footing in the aftermath of his loss. To make matters worse, she's estranged from her son Braden, who works as an architect in Washington. She finds solace in books and in the time she spends with her students, but still, she can't shake the feeling that she's a bit stuck.

She buried her husband in the sea. Seventeen years later, she followed him across it. In 1846, Eliza Sinclair watched a storm take her husband and son. She was left with five children, a sheep farm in New Zealand, and a grief that should have broken her. It didn't. At sixty-three years old, Eliza did something extraordinary.

Charlie is already feeling adrift when she relocates to an exclusive town in coastal New England with her mysteriously distant husband, Dev, and their young twins in tow. She hopes the move will recharge her stalled marriage, and she wants her kids to feel like they belong, even if she’s clearly a fish out of water herself. In a strange new world where summer is a verb and both the harbor and the partygoers are awash in a dizzying constellation of pinks and pastels, she’s never felt so confounded or alone. She’ll need more than a preppy handbook to find her way.

To everyone who knows her, 28-year-old Marcia leads the perfect life. But beneath the shiny surface lurks another reality. Plagued by panic attacks brought on by her family's wartime legacy and exacerbated by the news, Marcia is convinced that "demons" occupy her closet - and her mind. Determined to conceal her secret life, Marcia is pushed closer and closer to a breaking point. Desperate to rid herself of her "demons", she concocts a plan, hoping to be reborn as a new person. Soon, she discovers this creates its own problems. Can she find another path out of her psychic pain?
