"Call me Ishmael." With these words, Herman Melville launches the ultimate tale of the sea. Captain Ahab is driven by a singular, manic purpose: to hunt and kill Moby Dick, the legendary White Whale that took his leg.

"The Whale" (or "Moby Dick" as it is more commonly-known today) is the unforgettable story of Captain Ahab’s quest to avenge the whale that ‘reaped’ his leg. The quest and the novel is a story of how man can become blindly obsessed. The tale is also a testament to democracy and liberation, as the ship's crew work together for a common end. Ishmael, the novel’s narrator is a young, ordinary sailor learning the practice of whaling. Moby Dick is one of the greatest novels ever written and a timeless classic.

Moby-Dick is widely considered to be the Great American Novel and a treasure of world literature. The story details the adventures of the wandering sailor Ishmael and his voyage on the whale ship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael soon learns that Ahab seeks one specific whale: Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white sperm whale. In a previous encounter, the whale destroyed Ahab's boat and bit off his leg. And Ahab intends to take revenge.

Moby Dick dello scrittore americano Herman Melville è oggi considerato uno dei più importanti libri della letteratura mondiale...

"It is the horrible texture of a fabric that should be woven of ships' cables and hawsers. A Polar wind blows through it, and birds of prey hover over it." So Melville wrote of his masterpiece, one of the greatest works of imagination in literary history. In part, Moby-Dick is the story of an eerily compelling madman pursuing an unholy war against a creature as vast and dangerous and unknowable as the sea itself. But more than just a novel of adventure, more than an encyclopaedia of whaling lore and legend, the book can be seen as part of its author's lifelong meditation on America.

The book is sailor Ishmael's narrative of the obsessive quest of Ahab, captain of the whaling ship Pequod, for revenge on Moby Dick, the giant white sperm whale that on the ship's previous voyage bit off Ahab's leg at the knee.

The sailor Ishmael gets himself hired on the "Pequod" for a whaling voyage, and tells the story of an astounding journey and of the obsessed Captain...

In his tales of the South Seas, Jack London often employs dark humor and grim irony in order to illuminate the clash of cultures. In "The Whale Tooth", a white man becomes the victim of his own impulse to proselytize the benighted "heathens" on Melanesia.

It was in the early days in Fiji, when John Starhurst arose in the mission house at Rewa Village and announced his intention of carrying the gospel throughout all Viti Levu. Now Viti Levu means the "Great Land," it being the largest island in a group composed of many large islands, to say nothing of hundreds of small ones. Here and there on the coasts, living by most precarious tenure, was a sprinkling of missionaries, traders, beche-de-mer fishers, and whaleship deserters.
