Enchantments run deep on the magical Isle of Cadence: gossip is carried by the wind, plaid shawls can be as strong as armour and the smallest cut of a knife can instil fathomless fear. The capricious spirits that live there find mirth in the lives of the humans who call the land home, but that mischief turns to malevolence as girls begin to go missing. Adaira, heiress of the East, knows the spirits only answer to a bard’s music, enticing them to return the missing girls. But there’s only one bard capable of drawing the spirits forth by song: her childhood enemy, Jack Tamerlaine.

Three teenage girls. Three disabilities. Three elemental powers. Elle is Deaf, navigating a hearing world through lip-reading and American Sign Language. Meen lost her sight at nine and rebuilds reality through sound and temperature. Teena has cerebral palsy and fights for every inch of independence her wheelchair allows. Thrown together in a Bronx group home, they discover they share something beyond their status as "hard to place" foster children. Elle can command the wind with her hands. Meen controls fire and heat. Teena can sense and move the earth itself.

Minisc Premier has never wanted to be like his father. Most kids would kill to have the Hero of Light, the most famous Elementalist in history, as their dad. Minisc hates the pressure though, and wants only to bring his mother’s dying wish to life: Unity and peace between humans and Elementalists, the recently evolved species capable of controlling and wielding elements such as light, fire, and water. With Minisc Lily and Jules still reeling from the tragedies that befell everyone at the Tournament of Elements, fractures begin to form.
