Beautiful story

Loved the story and the narrator was perfect. Looking forward to listening to the sequel.

Might be better to read it, rather than listen.

This is a good story, unfortunately though it is let down by using jarring words like 'Mum.' In the era the story is set in it should surely be 'Mother.' These kind of slip ups pull you from the story and really grate. I like the way the story is developing, the depth of each character and anticipation of where everything is heading.

Unfortunately, the narrator ruins it for me. I really like the tone of her voice but not the way she reads or the voices she uses for the characters.characters
I will definitely be moving on to book two as I'm intrigued enough in the story to push past the problems and see what happens.

A gaelic fantasy

An engaging read. Which I got frustrated with as the book rapped up. I will not continue when the sequel is eventually released.

Magical Storytelling with Fantastic Narration!

An absolute gem of a story: beautifully woven and laced with magic, intrigue, adventure, sizzling romance - but at its heart, human connection and the characters relationships with each other and with the natural world - and the mystical, elemental spirits that govern those elemental aspects of the mortal world. The story is well thought out, with excellent world building and robustly fleshed out, believable characters, and the pace is spot on. There is none of the usual predictability of obvious twists and cliffhangers, and the story has a satisfying conclusion, neatly trying up all loose ends.

In terms of the narration, Ruth Urquhart does a fantastic job of really bringing the story to life, and creating distinctive, properly differentiated characters with the magic of her voice and superlative acting skills.

I am also a fantasy novelist and it is, unsurprisingly, my favourite genre - particularly anything involving magic. This dualogy by Rebecca Ross has really blown me away, so if you want a compelling and immersive dose of escapism, then I highly recommend a stay in the magical isle of Cadence!

I wish it hadn't taken me so long to listen to this book as it was actually very enjoyable! The narrator was amazing and I loved the Scottish themes throughout. I have to say, I didn't find myself caring too deeply for any of the characters, and I also don't really care for the main romance either. I'm not sure if this is because of how the characters were written or just because of how long it took me to read this book but either way that's the main reason for my lower rating. I'm excited to see what happens in the second book!

Quality story telling

The language of this story is top quality, although the pacing is somewhat affected by the languid narration. It also contains some beautiful depictions of love, which I usually roll my eyes at. All in all, a wonderful, mystic experience.

Story with a potential

"Hero returns to hometown to solve mystery" kind of story but in fantasy setting.
I cannot say it didn't keep my attention, but the ending felt somewhat anticlimactic. I understand it's a series, but I was surprised when the book ended. The pacing could've been done better. I guess it applies to the whole book. Multiple POVs felt out of balance sometimes.
But I liked the story itself. It has the potential to unravel interestingly in the next installment.
I just wish there was more world building. I had trouble imaging surroundings with a few different ideas clashing in my mind. Clan having castle? I don't mind filling gaps for authors, but when the convention is broken, I expect some help.
The lector's pronunciation required some getting used to.

A sort of Fairytale

It’s a good story, but it really felt like it could’ve just been one book.

I enjoyed that it seemed like a fairytale and wasn’t a story I heard before. But you don’t spend a lot of time with any one character so it’s hard to get invested in them.

Great history and world building but I was kind of surprised and disappointed that the ending seemed in sight and out of nowhere conflict arises leading to book two.

I liked this, but I’m not invested enough to go on to book two.

I adore this series

I think this series will become my “nostalgia” series that I will return to many times in the years to come. It is such a gorgeous story and every chapter had me gripped. The Scottish narration was perfect.
