1863. Mutilated bodies have been found all over Colorado. The papers say that this is the work of the Colorado Axe Men. Allison Enderson and her husband Jesse are unfortunate enough to have a run-in with these serial killers. After they carve her face into a permanent smile, Allison goes hunting after these men to bring them to justice. Along the way, she'll travel with militiamen, vigilantes, soldiers, and mountain men. The venom in her mouth earns Allison the nickname "The Smiling Snake," as her lust for vengeance turns her heart to stone.

Nine years after watching the fall of the House of Gray, Smiling Snake has a reunion with an old friend, Donovan "Mad Dog" Douglas. Mad Dog recruits her to work for his new employer, the powerful banker Richard Farrow, who is a leader among the secret society called "The Builders."

Two years after the death of her husband at the hands of the Bloody Espinosas, the Smiling Snake has become a successful bounty hunter in Denver Colorado. An adolescent boy named Mordecai Gray comes to hire her to help hunt down the woman who killed his father. Snake soon discovers that Mordecai and his family were slaves on the Gray Plantation before the Civil War, and the daughter of their former master is hunting down and killing the runaways. Snake must brave the growing cold to hunt down this murderous woman and her hired guns and put a stop to the bloody feud.
