Greed equals ruin, but Noires want it all. A mask to conceal. A treasure to plunder. Harrowing heists and a shattering head. Conquest to conquest, controlling the game. Cash...No name, no face —just amber eyes and a thief who stole my attention. She thinks she got the last word. But as the owner of La Lune Noire, a resort for the corrupt, my resources are endless, and I never lose. When I track down the sly and stunning Sylvie Palmer, I’m mesmerized. Sparks fly. She feigns disinterest. But I know better. I chase her across the US with one vision in mind: her dress on my floor.

Nothing’s more exclusive than Noire Underground. Serving the wicked and reaping rewards. Secrets. Lies. Soot and cinders. Rhythm. Blades. Games and gore. A knife like a claw and the strike of a needle. This hidden haven is a throne of chains.

La Lune Noire has a pulse. It rules apart from its owners. Backroom deals and electro swing. Extravagant parties and bootlegger tunnels. The walls have secrets. The doors have codes. Ashes and lies. White oak and screams. Champagne and delusions. Hope is the gateway to hell.

Film noir: the name comes from the French for “black” or “dark film.” It points to the central feature of the genre: mood. There is a darkness about film noir, a somberness accompanied by a thrill of dread and ever-present danger. This aura envelops wealthy heiresses, English aristocrats, tough-guy drifters, jazz musicians, drug dealers, and respected schoolteachers—all of whom have secrets to hide and much to lose if those secrets are unveiled.

Beneath the glitter of Mardi Gras lies the sleaze of Bourbon Street; under the celestial sounds of JazzFest, the nightmare screams of a city once at war within its neighborhoods, but after Hurricane Katrina, seemingly at war with nature and the rest of the country as well. New Orleans is a third world country in itself, a Latin, African, European (and often amoral) culture trapped in a Puritan nation.

Vancouver is the so-called City of Glass. A nice place, in any case, and much too nice for noir. Looked at from afar, Vancouver may seem idyllic. But living here is different - cold and baffling and occasionally hostile. While outsiders focus on high-test BC bud, locals see a heroin crisis: Vancouver is home to the first legalized safe-injection site in North America, now heavily taxed by overdoses resulting from street drugs cut with fentanyl.

San Francisco Noir lashes out with hard-biting tales exploring the shadowy nether regions of scenic "Baghdad by the Bay". In this superb collection, virtuosos of the genre meet up with the best of SF’s literary fiction community to chart a unique psycho-geography for a dark landscape. From inner city boroughs to the outlands, each contributor offers an original story based in a distinct neighborhood.

James Dual, inspired by the racially integrated punky ska revival in England, starts the ON Klub, a ska, soul, and reggae club at the rough and ready pre-gentrified Silver Lake end of Sunset Blvd. He and partner in crime, Drea Dresden, try their best to make the transition out of the '70s in one piece. A journalist friend brings a mob-related music man connected to Bob Marley to visit the club, who becomes obsessed with the charismatic young Jamaican singer Loraine Sulley, who is performing that night.
