Ein Gespräch voller überraschender Wendungen Nives hat kürzlich ihren Mann verloren, nach langjähriger Ehe. Zuerst gefasst, bald aber einsam auf ihrem Hof, beschließt sie, ihr Lieblingshuhn Giacomina ins Haus zu holen, und muss erstaunt feststellen, wie gut ihr diese Gesellschaft tut. Als Giacomina sich eines Abends plötzlich nicht mehr bewegt, weil sie zu lange auf die Waschmaschinenwerbung gestarrt hat, gerät Nives in Panik: Sie ruft Loriano Bottai an, den befreundeten Tierarzt, den sie wie alle anderen Dorfbewohner seit Jahrzehnten kennt.

Meet Nives: widow, Tuscan through and through, survivor. Nives recently lost her husband of 50 years. She didn’t cry when she found him dead in the pig pen, and she didn’t cry at the funeral, but now loneliness has set in. When she decides to bring her favorite chicken inside for company, she is shocked, confused, and a little bit guilty to discover that the chicken’s company is a more-than-adequate replacement for her dead husband.

Nives Meroi è un'alpinista che ha cominciato una gara appassionante: in competizione con una spagnola, vorrebbe diventare la prima donna a conquistare tutti e quattordici gli Ottomila del mondo. Adesso è a quota dodici. Nives scala con suo marito e con un giovane fotografo, senza portatori d'alta quota, senza usare ossigeno. Il loro rapporto con la montagna è di assoluta purezza. Erri De Luca, anch'egli arrampicatore appassionato, è amico di Nives e la segue da tempo nelle sue imprese.
