You may think you know Vergil’s epic poem, The Aeneid - the story of Aeneas, a Trojan hero, prophesized to found Rome. Or maybe you’ve heard of the fearsome Cyclopes, the tragic queen Dido, the Trojan horse, the River Styx and the three headed dog who guards the underworld. But what of the man who wrote it and why? This is that story.

Three bank robbers are on the run following a rather unusual heist. They decide to seek shelter for the night in a tiny, seemingly harmless town. However, the following morning they awaken to discover that the town they chose is actually some form of disturbingly cheery utopia complete with sickly sweet citizens who have the rather odd habit of breaking into perfectly choreographed song and dance numbers. When they try to leave, they discover that getting out of this bizarre little village may not be as easy as they thought.

From the point of view of 2050, you're history. Theological warfare. Elvis on an epic time-travel journey - the Presliad. Buddhavision - a network bigger than God (and more powerful, too). Nasty nuclear leftovers. Naughty sex habits. Dalai Dan (the 153rd reincarnation of the Lama of that ilk) and Barry, the talkative Time Sprout. Even with all this excitement, you wouldn't think a backwater planet like Earth makes much of a splash in the galatic pond.

First published in 1921, Karel Capek's ultra-prescient play R.U.R has become a classic of dystopian literature, giving us the word 'robot' and inspiring movies and TV series from Blade Runner to Westworld. Set in Capek's 1920s version of the future, this radio reimagining blends music, comedy and drama to tell the story of a world dominated by mechanisation and the pursuit of profit.

Once upon a time, there lived a poor woodsman whose name was Ali Baba. While going to work one morning in the forest, Ali hears an approaching band of thieves. As he and his donkey, Poorba, hide, the marauding thieves stash their ill-gotten treasures into a huge rock that looks like a skull. "Open Sesame!" is the Chief Thief's cry, as the rock magically opens. After they leave, Ali tries it out for himself: "Open, Sesame!" and he and Poorba are soon inside a cave of treasures beyond their wildest dreams.

Al Griot tells this African myth like one of the traditional African bards, the griots. With drums, rattles, the fruits of the flame tree and all sorts of percussion, the story comes to life as if it had really happened.

Al Griot, Viola Bommer and Rudolf Stenzinger tell this fairy tale from Burkina Faso like traditional African bards, the griots. It is about a little girl who is treated so shabbily by her stepmother that she would rather live with the animals down by river than continue to lead this dog's life. Finally, however, with the help of a river fairy, she succeeds in awakening the conscience of the villagers. With drums, all kinds of percussion, vocals, double bass and many other instruments, this encouraging story comes to life as if it had really happened.
