The Soul of a Child places brilliant educator and reformer Maria Montessori in the context of her time. It examines the relationships, inner struggles, and inspirations of Montessori, a woman with heart, empathy, and resilience. As a strong woman who lived through two world wars, the rise of fascism in Spain and Italy and the dawn of the nuclear age, she remained undeterred in her faith in the possibility of positive change through education. Her life spanned both the joys of innovation and the horrors of destruction of the 20th century.

An artist turned naturalist known for her botanical illustrations, Merian was born just 16 years after Galileo proclaimed that the Earth orbited the sun. But at the age of 50, she sailed from Europe to the New World on a solo scientific expedition to study insect metamorphosis—an unheard-of journey for any naturalist at that time, much less a woman.

When the COVID pandemic struck her strong, athletic husband, Maria was forced to say goodbye through a hospital window. Doctors placed Drew in an induced coma on a ventilator and delivered devastating news: he had little chance of survival. Before going under, Drew promised, "I'll beat this." Maria whispered back, "I'll be here every day until you wake up."

Bringing Montessori to America traces in engrossing detail one of the most fascinating partnerships in the history of American education - that between Maria Montessori and S. S. McClure, from their first meeting in 1910 until their final acrimonious dispute in 1915.

Long before the world began seeking STEM - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics - education for girls, American Maria Mitchell proved that women were capable of achieving worldwide acclaim for brilliant reasoning and discoveries. Born to a Quaker family in 1818 Nantucket, Mitchell had opportunities unavailable to other girls of the time. The Quakers believed boys and girls should be educated, so Maria attended public schools. She also had the benefit of her father's tutelage. At an early age, she loved to perform the complex navigational computations requested by sailors.
