Do you need two personal brands, one professional and one personal? The Honorable James D. Rodriguez says no, and he has lived that answer at the highest levels of public service. Twice called by the White House to serve, he was the Senate-confirmed Assistant Secretary of Labor for Veterans’ Employment and Training, and the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense.
In those roles, James shaped national policy and legislation on veteran employment and built partnerships across federal and state agencies. When he was warned that fighting for military spouses would cost him his reputation, he did it anyway. That decision, he says, was only possible because he had never built two versions of himself. Today he is a nationally recognized voice on veteran affairs and workforce policy, with a career built on 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Lida Citroën has known James for more than 15 years, on stage in front of thousands and over lunch talking about their kids, and she has never seen him be a different person in either setting. Together they unpack the question Lida hears in nearly every coaching session, and why one personal brand, built on integrity and lived the same way at work and at home, is what makes a reputation sustainable.
The higher you rise, the more people see every version of you, and the gap between your “work self” and your real self is exactly where trust breaks down.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Why one personal brand, not a separate professional and personal brand, is what makes a reputation last
- How doing the right thing “regardless of who’s watching” builds influence a title can’t give you
- The difference between boundaries that protect you and boundaries that keep people out
- Why listening is the leadership skill most people underestimate
- How bringing others “on the bus” multiplies your impact instead of just raising your own profile
This conversation shows why one brand, built on integrity, is the one that lasts.
