Your step total may be accurate—and still leave out much of the story. Two walks can produce the same number while asking very different things of you. In this episode, Jack and Janet Finch explore what quantity alone cannot tell us about everyday movement.

We look beyond the total to walking quality, terrain, relative effort, how you feel afterward, and the circumstances around your day. The aim is to keep step counts useful while giving them the context they need.

Why counting still has value—and where interpretation can overreach.

Why the same total can represent different routes and experiences.

How to consider ease, effort, and recovery without turning observations into diagnoses.

Why strength, balance, and activities beyond walking belong in the picture.

A useful question for your next familiar walk: what would the number miss if it were the only thing you recorded?

A familiar walk feels longer. The stairs seem more demanding. A place you used to visit now feels uncertain. It is easy to put all of that under one heading: getting older. But what else changed?

In S3 E42 of The Bird’s-Eye View from FinchQ, Jack and Janet Finch explore the difference between the passing of time and changes in what everyday life asks us to do. Aging, health, physical conditioning, familiarity and confidence can influence the same activity. Understanding that overlap can open a more useful conversation.

What this episode explores
• How interrupted activity and changed routines can reshape everyday demands.
• Why fewer opportunities to practice can make a task feel less familiar.
• What three studies can—and cannot—tell us about mobility and activity restriction.
• How to think about confidence without dismissing real risks or barriers.
• Questions to bring to a clinician or physical therapist when function changes.

Key idea
The title is a question, not a diagnosis. Being older and being less practiced can both be true. Improvement may be possible, but persistent or unexplained changes should not automatically be attributed to either age or disuse.

Our FinchQ perspective
Here at FinchQ, we focus on function over time. Our FinchQ Score and FinchQ Functional Age™ provide wellness perspectives from available information; they cannot identify why a change occurred. Functional Age is not biological or clinical age.

A question to take with you
What meaningful activity have you stopped doing—and what changed around the time you stopped? Consider the routine, environment, confidence and support around it. Explore our work at https://www.iwantfinch.com.

An annual physical can produce a page of numbers while leaving a practical question unexplored: how is everyday movement changing? Blood pressure and laboratory results matter. So does the ability to walk to a friend’s home, cross a parking lot, or take part in the activities that make life yours.

In this opening episode of “Function Is the Real Story,” Jack and Janet Finch examine walking speed as one useful signal of physical function. Research in older adults has linked measured gait speed with later disability and survival. Those associations make it worth discussing; they do not turn a walking-speed reading into a diagnosis, a lifespan prediction, or proof that walking faster causes better health.

The conversation also asks what a number leaves out. Pain, recent illness, footwear, terrain, a walking aid, and testing conditions can influence a result. Everyday estimates collected by a device are not interchangeable with a standardized walking test. A single reading deserves context, and a sustained change can be a reason to ask better questions.

What You’ll Hear
• Why walking speed can reveal something step count alone cannot.
• What research in older adults supports—and what it does not prove.
• Why testing conditions and everyday circumstances affect a reading.
• How personal patterns can prompt useful questions.
• Why measurement should lead toward participation, rather than pressure.

A question to take with you: “How could we follow my physical function over time, alongside the other measurements we already discuss?” If walking has become persistently harder, slower, or less comfortable, bring that observation to a qualified professional rather than trying to interpret a score alone.

Independence is often mistaken for self-sufficiency: doing everything alone, needing nothing, accepting no help. But that has never been how any of us actually live. From glasses and seat belts to cars and phones, we rely on tools and people that extend what we can do.

So why can a cane or walker feel like surrender? In this episode, Jack and Janet look at the difference between isolation and autonomy, why visible support can be emotionally difficult, and how the right help can preserve the ability to choose, go, and participate in the life that matters to us.

What You Will Hear

Why the seat belt is a useful metaphor for independence.

The difference between self-sufficiency and meaningful choice.

Why visible aids can carry shame even when they increase access.

A more humane definition of independence: the ability to participate in a chosen life.

A new route feels uncomfortable. Technology becomes frustrating. A once-familiar activity gets harder. Each

decision to step back may make sense on its own—but together, those decisions can make our world smaller.

Jack and Janet Finch explore the brain’s continuing capacity to adapt and the difference between staying busy

and learning something new. The conversation asks how challenge, practice, movement, and recovery can

support participation without turning neuroscience into a promise of dementia prevention.

The article brings together findings about exercise, sustained new learning, cognitive reserve, and sleep. Those

studies ask different questions and measure different outcomes. A change in a particular memory task or brain

region is not a guarantee of lifelong cognitive health. The discussion keeps that distinction visible while

considering what it means to remain a beginner at something.

What You’ll Hear

• How neuroplasticity differs from growing new neurons.

• Why familiar routines and demanding new learning ask different things of the brain.

• How avoidance can reduce practice and confidence.

• What exercise, new skills, and sleep research can—and cannot—tell us.

• Why manageable challenge and appropriate support can help keep participation possible.

This is an invitation to consider manageable challenge in the context of your own circumstances. Modifying an

activity, accepting help, or using appropriate support can preserve participation. The goal is not to become

younger or ignore limitations; it is to notice what remains possible and what you might want to learn next.

A city at three in the morning can look almost motionless. Yet street sweepers, sanitation crews, maintenance teams, and deliveries are already preparing it for the next day. Sleep may be the brain’s version of that hidden shift—not a shutdown, but a change in what work becomes possible.

Jack and Janet explore the glymphatic hypothesis, the distinction between cerebrospinal and interstitial fluid, the relationship between slow-wave sleep and brain-fluid dynamics, and studies examining amyloid-beta and tau after sleep loss. They also explain why the mouse-to-human leap matters and why scientists continue to debate exactly how clearance changes during sleep.

Patch Adams may be one of the easiest physicians in modern culture to recognize—and one of the easiest to misunderstand.

The red clown nose, outrageous clothing and the 1998 movie made clowning synonymous with his name. Yet his ideas began decades before Hollywood arrived. Adams and the Gesundheit Institute were experimenting with a much broader proposition: that caring for another person involves more than diagnosing a condition and delivering a treatment.

In S3 E37 of The Bird’s-Eye View from FinchQ, Jack and Janet look beyond the clown nose to examine the ideas underneath it: spending time with people, reducing rigid social hierarchies, incorporating friendship and community into care, and treating play, creativity and human connection as meaningful parts of the experience of illness and recovery.

The episode does not argue that laughter cures disease or that unconventional care should replace scientifically grounded medicine. Instead, it asks something more uncomfortable: can medicine become technically better while becoming relationally poorer?

WHAT YOU’LL HEAR

• Why Patch Adams's story began long before the Hollywood movie
• What the Gesundheit experiment was actually trying to change
• Why clowning was a method rather than the entire philosophy
• The difference between treating disease and caring for a person
• What Adams's work can still make us question about modern care

Adding a little weight to a walk can seem like an easy way to turn everyday movement into strength training. Strap on ankle weights, add wrist weights, or wear a weighted vest—and suddenly the same activity feels harder.

But harder does not necessarily mean the movement is simply the same with more resistance. Adding weight can change the way your body moves.

In this episode of The Bird’s-Eye View from FinchQ, Jack and Janet explore what happens when resistance is added to the body during movement: how muscle-recruitment patterns can shift, why ankle and wrist weights behave differently from a weighted vest, and why the way a weight is used may matter as much as the amount of weight itself.

The important distinction is between targeted resistance and incidental resistance. An ankle weight used during a deliberate leg exercise may be doing exactly what you intend. The same weight worn during a walk may alter stride, muscle recruitment, and the way forces travel through the joints.

What You’ll Hear

Why wearable weights can change movement patterns rather than simply make movement harder

How ankle weights may change the balance of work between the quadriceps and hamstrings

Why targeted exercises and weighted walking are not necessarily equivalent

How weighted vests distribute resistance differently from ankle or wrist weights

Why establishing your normal movement pattern—or baseline—matters before adding resistance

One useful question to ask: Am I moving this way because I’m stronger, or because my body is compensating?

Why beginning with small amounts of resistance and progressing deliberately may be more useful than simply chasing greater effort

The larger idea goes beyond wearable weights: effort and adaptation are not always the same thing. Sometimes the most useful information is not how hard an exercise feels, but what changed in the way you performed it.
