What if the sun disappeared tomorrow—and the world was left in darkness forever?

In this episode of Looks Creepy Cool Podcast: The Mirror Room, host Renee Huff welcomes horror author Daniel Barnett, creator of The Nightmareland Chronicles, a sprawling supernatural horror saga where daylight vanishes, civilization begins to collapse, and humanity's deepest nightmares take physical form.

But this conversation goes far beyond an apocalyptic horror story.

Daniel opens up about his childhood fear of the dark, how terror eventually became a creative obsession, and why the most frightening monsters are often reflections of the things we carry within ourselves.

    Together, Renee and Daniel explore:

    • The inspiration behind a world without sunlight.
    • How childhood fears influence the stories we tell.
    • John Hawthorne's search for his estranged daughter and the emotional weight of love, guilt, and survival.
    • The moral boundaries between protection, justice, and violence.
    • Why people cling to hope and belief when everything familiar disappears.
    • How Daniel creates different forms of horror across an ambitious twelve-volume saga.
    • A real-life research road trip involving dangerous mountain roads, an unsettling encounter, and an unforgettable journey through Wyoming.

And when Daniel reaches the Mirror Room's Final Door, Renee asks a question even the creator of Nightmareland may not be prepared to answer:

If the darkness could look back at Daniel Barnett instead of his characters, what would it see?

Step inside the Mirror Room, where the greatest horrors aren't always waiting outside.

  • Inside the Mind of Horror Author M. Boudreaux | The Grief Counselor & The Listener

What happens when grief, memory, and the people we trust become the things we should fear most?

In this episode of Looks Creepy Cool Podcast: Horror Stories & the Creators Behind the Fear, independent horror author M. Boudreaux steps into the Mirror Room to explore the fears, memories, and human experiences behind her psychological and supernatural horror.

    M. Boudreaux is the author of The Listener and The Grief Counselor. Her fiction begins with deeply human fears and relationships before pushing them into darker territory—where memory can't always be trusted and the people offering comfort may be the ones you should fear most.

    📖 The Grief Counselor

Dr. Elias Shepherd has built his life around helping people survive devastating loss. But his relationship with mourning goes far beyond helping people through it.

The psychological horror novel explores grief, obsession, control, dangerous trust, and an unsettling question: What happens when the person who understands your pain better than anyone may also be the person you should fear most?

    📖 The Listener

In 1998, seven children entered the tunnels beneath Seattle. Six came home.

Twenty-two years later, the past begins calling them back—sometimes in the voices of the people they miss most.

Blending psychological and supernatural horror, The Listener explores childhood trauma, unreliable memory, and six adults forced to confront something they survived as children.

    🪞 Inside the Mirror Room

Renee talks with M. Boudreaux about the stories behind both novels, why grief and memory repeatedly find their way into her fiction, writing unreliable and morally complicated characters, the intersection of psychological and supernatural horror, and the personal experiences and emotions that sometimes make their way onto the page.

And, of course, we find out what frightens the person who creates these worlds—and what looks back when M. Boudreaux steps into the Mirror Room.

  • S3 E13: What Lurks Beneath Appalachia? | Dark Hollow Director Daniel Byers
    Sep 17 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

What happens when something buried beneath Appalachia refuses to stay buried?

Writer and director Daniel Byers enters the Mirror Room to discuss his horror film Dark Hollow—a creature feature rooted in Appalachian darkness, family, transformation and the things that may be better left underground.

Growing up in West Virginia, Daniel was surrounded by cryptid lore, from Bigfoot to Mothman. He shares how that tradition influenced the creation of Dark Hollow's monster and takes us behind the scenes of filming inside a real coal mine, where the cast and crew experienced tight spaces, cold temperatures and moments of complete darkness.

Daniel also reveals how his team brought the creature from his imagination to the screen using practical effects layered with CGI, and we venture beyond filmmaking into his own encounters with the supernatural, cultural beliefs, fear of transformation, moral darkness and what he believes may—or may not—be waiting beyond what we can explain.

🎬 Dark Hollow is written and directed by Daniel Byers and distributed by Brainstorm Media. Available now to rent digitally. Watch Now on Prime Video

What happens when someone who spends her career examining horror turns the mirror on herself?

Horror author, critic, interviewer, and iHorror Senior Staff Writer Luna Gray steps inside the Mirror Room for a conversation about fear, folklore, identity, and what draws us toward the darker corners of storytelling.

Luna's work explores cult, indie, folk, queer, and streaming horror, with a particular interest in how the genre reflects identity, trauma, folklore, and the people society chooses not to believe.

She's also the author of No House Is Empty, a winter folk-horror novel about a married couple attempting to host the perfect Christmas Eve party while their life quietly falls apart. When carolers arrive, old household rules begin turning the celebration into an accounting of broken vows, buried grief, debt, and everything they've tried to hide behind a beautifully staged home.

Inside the Mirror Room, we go beyond the book and the byline to explore the person behind the fear.
