About this listen

My name is James, but my mom’s the only person that can call me that. To everyone else, I’m JD — a struggling artist, working my fingers to the bone for my shot with one of the big comic book companies.

Oh, and I work nights, managing a dive called Judson’s Bar and Grill. I know: the dream life. Things were boring, disappointing, even. Until one fateful night when everything changed.

What happened first? An odd woman showed up in a booth while I was trying to close up for the night – rude, but on its own, not so weird. She was dressed in a kimono and had a sword in her lap; that part was a little strange.

What happened next? It turns out she’s a mistress at a magical academy, and she has been looking for me...(please pick up on my sarcasm here). Except then she proved it, and with just a few violent swings of her very real sword, she ensured that I didn’t have a job anymore. So, I more or less had to follow her into a scary, glowing portal.

Where did it take me? A surreal place called Zenith Academy, and a life I’d only ever dreamt of; a place I’ll learn how to cultivate mana and wield magic-like powers. And that is just the beginning. The tower imbues cultivators with visual prompts and game-like stats, making my new life feel like something straight out of a choose your own adventure novel. But it’s not all for nothing.

Evidently, they’ve been fighting a war for thousands of years, and I’ve just been drafted.

Part of the time the narrator gets carried away and suddenly an elf sounds like smaug. Otherwise a solid book.

Very overacted

I’m not gonna lie, the world has potential nothing new but it could be made into something but ! The main characters are so poorly written it hurt me or at least this is what I perceive to be poorly written. All the main characters at one point or another describe how they can’t do this or feel shy or anxious about something then immediately follow up with doing the exact thing with absolute ease ! The MC is sex crazed but will never let down “his girls” unless literally any other women breaths in his vicinity. Has potential but I don’t think I can continue the series. If you enjoy fantasy isekai I promise you’ll love The Wandering Inn

EDIT: Coming back to update this review to say the book is apparently part of a genre called Harem-lit, and having an MC who gets all the ladies while being OP is the whole shtick. So maybe my review is a bit too harsh, but I still stand by the idea that whatever harem-lit is can stay as far away from me as possible.

They say never to judge a book by it's cover, but boy oh boy I wish I had. Especially since that covers art style screams AI generated. Anyways, onto the actual review. If you like hearing more about a woman's curves, or voluptuousness, or how MC is not a creep/perve yet is ALWAYS STARING then this book is right up your alley. If you wanted an actual litRPG with entertaining combat, interesting lore, and fun characters then this book might not be for you, maybe, can't claim that honestly since after nearly 3 hours I am dropping this book.

The MC feels a bit bland but honestly he's not too bad, he babbles when he's nervous and is awkward but it feels a touch real. All the other characters introduced so far have been gorgeous and curvaceous women who wear revealing clothing and the author makes sure to describe these things in detail every time, because it's apparently important for the story /s. I was trying to just deal with it and when the MC got his unique weapon I thought "finally progress!" aaaaaannnnd then back to talking about how "in this world, we don't hold an aversion to sex like in your world" and all that tells me is that the author is most definitely going to keep writing about breasts every three sentences.

So I am done giving it a chance, if I wanted to read borderline smut I would've gotten smut. Hell I double checked just to make sure this book isn't listed as smut or anything similar. Maybe I'm just not the target audience for this book, I can admit that's a possibility, but if I'm nearly 3 hours in and am already annoyed with how much I keep hearing about breasts and tight fighting yet highly revealing clothes and NOT hearing about the magic, fantasy, and wonder of the world. I'd say you're doing a poor job of trying to reel me into your world, In fact, you failed to do so and that's why I am here warning anyone else to just save your money/credits.

Save your money/credit and look elsewhere.
