Summary

Connor Magnuson is going to conquer Death itself.

A penniless drifter, Connor has survived the last eight years alone in a cursed woodland teeming with monsters that eat grown men whole. Shunned, forgotten, and with nowhere else to go, he looks death in the eye every night and draws his sword to face it. The forest, after all, burned the fear out of him long ago.

Still, it hasn't hardened the last shreds of his heart quite yet. When Connor hears a mysterious girl scream in the middle of nowhere, he ends up in a brutal battle that nearly costs him his life. His bravery does not go unrewarded, and in the aftermath of the fight, he finds himself bonded to the most infamous enchantment the world has ever seen: the Wraith King. The undead abomination grants him godlike power, but legendary magic always comes with a cost. Even as his fellow outcasts flock to him for help, Connor is branded as an outlaw. Kings and lords alike know where the wraith has gone, and they'll slit his throat to take it from him. To them, a peasant like Connor is unworthy. He's a mistake to be corrected, and nothing more.

But Connor is no ordinary man, and he'll drag those hunters to hell with him if that's what it takes to protect what is his.

Cringe.

"I'm no hero." Risks own life for little family that has never met. Crying from guilt for killing men swinging swords at his head.

Sounds like an edgy high schooler wrote it. Couldn't get past first few chapters.

Awful. Cliche.

Initially I was disappointed even infuriated at the book. So many cliches littered the pages. And a fight scene that comprised 4 chapters. But, I stuck it out and changed my mind. Now I'm looking forward to the next one. I still hate the narrator.

Slow

First off, this is definitely worth a credit. A lot of content.. Interesting story and world. It starts off very strong, but the rest of the story drags on. Needed more action to break up the 27 hrs.

Needs some work.

The story itself is ok but the author uses a lot of words to convey simple ideas. Some outcomes are so obvious that it's hard to listen too. The characters are likable but the depth and development are lacking. I love long books but this could have had 4 hrs cut and it would not have changed a thing.

a review

The story was interesting but at times I found it hard to stay focused with the narrator. best way I can put it, he read the boring going through the motion parts like it should be interesting and I found that distracting. Definitely was trying to hard.

Can’t do it

I wanted to like it. The concept was cool, but the execution? Meh… I’d rather listen to a donkey bray at midnight.

not for me

The writing / narrator combo was impossible to sit through. Every single sentence was written and delivered with maximum possible drama - I didn't make it even 2 chapters in. if everything is "epic"... nothing is epic.

Great book

Man, this was really a great book. I actually did not expect it to be as good as it was. I would go as far as saying it’s probably the best book I’ve read in a while. Only complaint I have is, I feel like this narrator doesn’t do a really good job of narrating female voices. But, perhaps that’s just me. But overall, I like the narrator and the book. Mind you. the narrator doesn’t do a great job of narrating female voices, it’s not to the point where it sounds too ridiculous or even cartoonish. I just heard better from other narrators. So, don’t let that decide whether you’ll listen to the book or not. It’s definitely worth listening too

An over excited narrator telling a bland story

The book itself was pretty bland with a lot of fights that seemingly should have ended 3 life threatening wounds ago, or an over exhausted person on the verge of death still able to bring forth their full strength regardless of energy or blood loss. During said fights the narrator's words per minute triples while he feels the need to yell the 30 minute long fight at you.

Worth the credit if you're looking for a time filler, not so if you want your next best pickup.

Amazing new story

This story is amazing! I love fantasy and read/listen to a new story approximately every 3 days. This is, without a doubt, one of the best I’ve indulged. There is one downside. At times the narrator sounds like a constipated surfer, but still it didn’t detract too much.
