Summary

The things that go bump in the night are supposed to be headboards, not monsters.

Leaving my husband was hard. Trying to face the world alone with my teenage daughter is the sort of thing nightmares are made of, but I caught a break. My best friend just hired me for a great job. It's not anything special; simply managing the leasing office of this very fancy and highly exclusive neighborhood, yet the perks mean I get my second chance.

Speaking of perks, my rent-free house is right beside not just one handsome man, but five! Each one is hotter than the last, and all of them seem interested in me. Maybe I can't remember the last date I was on, but if I want to master being a strong woman, then this is a good place to start. It's just dating, right? Normal life stuff. Not so much.

Everyone around us has these strange golden eyes...and there are the questions no one will answer. And who cares if there's a lot of wildlife running around at night? I do, especially when a wolf keeps sneaking into my backyard. I have a kid to worry about. Things have got to change before someone gets bitten!

Normal is going out the window, and fast.

My neighbors say I don't belong here, and they don't mean because I'm Hispanic. Never mind that I just heard a man growl. Now they're talking about fated somethings, and I'm pretty sure they mean me. I feel like I'm going crazy! Because when I said I wanted to learn how to be strong, this wasn't what I meant at all. Still, when it comes to taking care of my little girl, I will definitely learn how to be the biggest bitch on the block.

I just hope that doesn't become literal.

The Wolves Next Door series contains some profanity and mature content.

Great listen

Loved the e book but the voices really bring the story to life, Lola James is exactly how I imagined Elena to be like. Looking forward to book 2.

Good

The book is very well written and has a lot of light humor. It's a medium burn RH. The characters are all likeable and had you rooting for them. If you are looking for fun light RH shifter romance, would definitely recommend.

****SPOILER ALERT*******

This bugs me so much that even though the rest of the book was good I don't know if I will continue with the next one. Elianas daughter Gabby gets super sick, come to find out that her boyfriend purposely bit her to turn her to a wolf. Eliana gets told that Gabby might die and if she does survive there is a 50/50 chance she will never turn back human. AND on top of that obviously at the same time finds out werewolves exist. ALSO that her 5 men mated her without telling her but had declared it to the pack so everyone else knew. Sooo finds all that out within like and hour and instead of flipping her shit like a normal person. She just basically accepts everything and isn't pissed off. WHAT!!! No mama bear would have that reaction. SORRY NO! I just can't get past how she handles the situation or lack of handling I should say.

Very enjoyable & engaging,...

I have read most of Auryn's books & always look fwd to the next one. Each series is something new, inventive & draws you in, & while werewolves are not a new theme she gives her trademark fresh twist to the story. Auryn writes with a depth, richness & versatility you don't often come across.
I found the narrators engaging, well read & easy to listen to - a very immersive experience. I would suggest that is probably best not listened to in public as the evolving relationship gets pretty steamy! I will happily be getting the next two in the series as they become available.

Great performances, good story, weird sex

I really enjoyed this story with the concept of integrating humans into their lives and the voices. I love supernatural stuff and werewolves especially. where this story goes wrong is with the gang bangs and poly relationship... I'm not into multiple people sex and the sex scenes aren't needed, they're not even well written and even more awkward being heard aloud, I just skipped them. The flirting and poly aspect outside of the sex scenes seems believable, though not being in the poly community I can't say for sure, the sex is weird, Lane is fated to Elaina but he isn't her boyfriend, Ian is and now no one else in the Alpha/Beta pack can have their own relationship.... yet Ian wants to be a different pack leader... I don't know maybe I missed something or it's not explained well but something about the forced poly relationship doesn't sit well. I can't express enough how weird the sex scenes are and if it's not your style, just skip it and you'll miss out on nothing.

LOVE this book

I truly enjoyed this audiobook. The narrators did an outstanding job. This book is overall sweet and focused on relationships building between the characters. I loved the pace, the dedication of the characters towards eachother ans the fact that this was low on drama. It was a nice breather to read about realistic characters and real relationships.

Steamy, Romantic & Relatable

The story being narrated by separate POV narrators was new to me, and I found it worked really, really well. The deep male voices gave the characters more life and the accents for the right characters came across beautifully.
The characters all felt relatable and real, with the same daily struggles we all face - and yet it remains a great paranormal romance RH story.
I'm really keen to see where the story goes - I just need to remember to lower the volume on those steamy scenes!

Good AND Bad

The good stuff:

1. The pack dynamic and "mating ritual" ideals are a nice slight shift from the norm.

2. Aiden Snow's performances are so much better these days, with only a couple of mispronunciations. Good African American narrators make me happy.

3. This is a REALLY full-length story. You'll get your money's worth. Even better (and really unusual for a series), there's no cliffhanger. You could finish this story with the sense that it's the end. There is a book #2, but you don't have to move on. You can be content at the end of book #1 (hope that makes sense).

On to the negatives, which are major enough to keep me from spending the credit on book #2:

1. While I know that the daughter is mentioned in the book summary, and is a part of the plot, the reverse harem paranormal romance - which is why you're interested, right? - somehow took a sharp turn into teen angst universe. So much that I found myself wincing during a few of her monologues. It's clear that the writer wanted me to care about the teen character way more than I did. I didn't care about the chapters-long school play rehearsals, or the bffs. The book's climax directly resulted from the teen's narcissistic, completely illogical and irrevocable life-altering decision, and the writer treats the teen's ridiculous rants as the voice of reason for seven adults.

2. Although this is a "fated mates" romance, only one of the five men are a mate. The others sort of shrug and go with it. None of them are in love. One even only needs a place to "stick his *****".

3. The sex scenes were...odd? The romance was steamy, but the actual physical sex...it felt off, like the writer wanted to rush through it? It could be the narrator. See #4. EDIT: Its been a couple of days since I wrote this review, and I've finally figured it out. The problem with the sex scenes is that Lola James slows down her narration...I mean, a LOT...when she's reading sex scenes. So it comes off sounding like a nursery rhyme.

4. Lola didn't differentiate between the male characters' voices, and the writer only mentions the speaking character once. So unless you're really listening, you'll spend the whole discussion wondering who's talking.

Muy Caliente!

I must say, I usually don't enjoy the multiple mate series, but it does work in this series due to the creative story. I also really enjoy the mother/daughter relationship between Elena and Gabby. It also helps that the narration is excellent, because I expect the "Alpha" to have a low strong, but sexy voice and believe me, Ian fits that to a tee! Book 1 was just getting started on the long journey with the "Wolf Run" pack and I am excited to dive into book two in order to find out what direction Auryn Hadley takes this story.

The narrators were excellent... Story was lacking.

The narration was excellent... However, the story line was sorely lacking something. I couldn't get over how many times the main character mentioned her age (40 years old) or her lack of self confidence (it was a major plot device... her self esteem/lack there of). The majority of conflict was based in the female main characters head and how she didn't feel good enough/on the same level of the men. It's hard to explain mostly it just felt exhausting or tedious... The same conversations had over and over again because the female mc didn't think she was an appropriate match for the 5 male mc's. The men were constantly talking about how awesome, sexy, wonderful, perfect the female mc was but the female mc didn't sell an ounce of it. Mostly, I felt the repetition of hearing the same things over and over again. Bummed.

A New Take on Shifters!!

I really liked this shifter romance. It went in a whole new and very interesting direction. This author is NEVER boring! The narrators are on point with the characters. They helped make the story come alive. I got so caught up in the story, I stopped what I was doing to just listen!
