Story
In middle age, many strivers begin to find success coming harder and harder, rewards less satisfying and family relationships withering. In response, they do what strivers always do: they double down on work in an attempt to outrun decline and weakness, and deny the changes that are becoming more and more obvious. The result is often anger, fear and disappointment at a time in life that they imagined would be full of joy, fulfilment and pride. It doesn’t have to be that way.

We're in the middle of an epidemic of stress and anxiety. Average life expectancy in the US is down. At work, less than sixteen percent of us are fully engaged. In many high-stress jobs such as distribution centers, emergency room nursing, and teaching, incidences of PTSD are higher than veterans returning from war zones. We are getting something terribly wrong. Our workplaces fail utterly to provide for or capitalize on one of our most basic human needs: our need for love.

Excellent as always

Summary
In our increasingly accelerated world that venerates the new, bright and shiny, many of us in mid-career sense that the ground is shifting beneath our feet, leaving us feeling invisible, undervalued and threatened by the 'digital natives' nipping at our heels.
Chip Conley is not buying it, arguing that experience is on the brink of a comeback. At age 52, after selling the boutique hotel company he founded and ran for 24 years, Conley joined Airbnb as Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy. Though rich with experience, the industry veteran lacked the digital fluency of his 20-something colleagues. He quickly discovered that he'd been hired as a teacher and mentor, but was also in many ways a student and intern. What emerged is the secret to thriving as a mid-life worker in today's world: learning to marry wisdom and experience with curiosity, a beginner's mind, and a willingness to evolve.
Igniting a bold, urgent conversation about age and ageism in the workplace, Conley liberates the term 'elder' from the stigma of 'elderly' and reveals the value of wisdom that can only be accrued through years on the planet. Wisdom at Work will teach you how to be indispensable in the second half of your working life.

A very relevant book for someone about start the second part of their lives
I first listened to Chip’s interview at the Tim Ferris show and was captivated by his ideas about being a modern elder.
For someone like me taking time for reflection before the second half starts this book is inspirational.
