 「国境の長いトンネルを抜けると雪国であった。夜の底が白くなった。」の冒頭部分が有名な川端康成の代表作。雪国の温泉宿を舞台に、東京に妻子のある島村と、土地の芸者である一途な駒子の揺れ動く心の襞を軸に、彼女とも知り合いの美しい葉子への関心と平行しながら描かれる。雪国の雪の白さ、冷たく澄みきった空気の透明感や緊張感、温泉の温かさや湯煙、突き抜けるような青空、若葉の瑞々しい緑、列車の汽笛、そして駒子の肌の感触、女性2人の美しい声や手鞠歌の歌声、火事の紅い炎と熱気・・・五感に訴える哀しくも美しい川端美学の結晶的な作品。 上巻は、トンネルの向こうに広がる雪国の温泉地での、島村と若芸者駒子との出会いの回想から始まる。島村は山歩きや縮の買い入れなどで、時々この温泉地にやってくる。よばれてやってきた駒子は、雪国の生まれで、東京でお酌をしているうちに旦那に請け出され、やがては日本舞踊の師匠として身を立てさせてもらうつもりでいたところ、1年半ばかりで旦那が死んだという身の上だった。駒子はやがて島村に惹かれるも、島村は距離をおき、1年近く来ないときもあった。しかし、駒子の一途さや清潔な印象、弾く三味線の調べなどに惹かれていく。駒子の気持ちは揺れ、駅で見送るときも辛い。そんな時、駒子の家の病人を一心に看病する葉子が、病人の急変を告げに駆けてきた。葉子は、いつかここに来る列車で向いの席にいた声の美しい女性であった・・・。（C）2013響林社 Asian Genre Fiction Literary Fiction World Literature
