 いつか来たときの列車で向いの席にいた声の美しい女性の葉子は、駒子の家の若い病人を看病していたが、その病人も亡くなった。その後毎日、墓に参っていた。葉子は、湯に入るといつも澄んだ声で歌うのだった。駒子の使いでやって来た葉子と話すと、いずれ東京にいくので一緒に連れて行ってほしいという。ある日の早朝、駒子は宿の裏の坂を上ってそっと島村の部屋にやってきた。その夜も泥酔して島村の宿に立ち寄った。「君はいい女だね」という言葉に突然怒りだす。島村は、いつか駒子が通ってくるのを心待つにする気持ちになりながら、他方で自分のわがままに呵責が募るのであった。もうこれからは来られないだろうと思いながら長逗留を続けた晩秋のある日、島村の乗る車に飛び乗ってきた駒子と街を歩く。そこに突然、半鐘が鳴り出した。映画上映が行われている繭倉が火事だという。二人は駆けだした・・・。（C）2013響林社 Asian Genre Fiction Literary Fiction World Literature
