About this listen

Home is where the heart is: a place where memories are forged, a refuge from the world. But what if those memories are painful? And the refuge becomes a prison?

Jessica Lockhart is in need of a live-in carer over the Christmas period; Isla Barrow is the woman who takes the job. After a fraught journey to reach her along remote country lanes, Isla arrives to find the old woman in distress, and the house strangely unnerving.

With the weather hostile, no phone line or mobile signal, and her charge growing increasingly frail, Isla realizes death is waiting. And something else besides: vengeance.

Jessica is clearly a woman with secrets, but then, so too is Isla. Together, they must work out a plan of redemption before what stalks Wildacre destroys them both. Christmas, a time of joy and wonder. The darkest time of year.

The narrator speaks too fast and in a whispery voice. It''s as though she is rattling through it at great speed and it's doesn't allow for any of the atmosphere or the tension to build. I won't finish this one. Story so far ok, a bit predictable. I think the main character is meant to be a young woman, carer and so it would have been more believable and engaging if it has been read by someone who sounded like the character.

I struggled with the narration

I really should have given this one a miss. Love Shani Struthers, especially Psychic Surveys. I did battle through it, but found the main character very stupid, so I found the whole story difficult to get through.

Not believable

The story is intriguing and I really want to get to the end but the voice actor talks in a whisper and it really agitates me. To the point t where I don’t think I can finish it.
I know it’s daft, but if I’d seen a review that said the entire book is whispered, I wouldn’t have bought it. So if you can listen to someone whispering for hours on end, give it a try. If that bothers you, give this one a miss.
