Summary

Sara Baron’s dream job as a professional symphony musician is threatened by a medical affliction. She returns to her hometown in Upstate New York to receive physical therapy and hopefully recover enough to resume her career. While playing duets for the opening of the town’s new community center, lights go out and a gunshot echoes through the reception area. The building contractor, a man with no shortage of enemies, is dead. Her duet partner and childhood friend begs her to help find the killer when her father, Sara’s old chemistry teacher, is at the top of the suspect list. With her keen sense of hearing and attention to detail, Sara has the ability and the time to play amateur sleuth, but is it worth the risk?

This isn’t the only choice Sara must make. Her family’s oboe-making business needs her, and she’s fallen in love with her physical therapist. If she’s able to return to her job at the end of her leave, one of her dreams will die no matter which road she chooses. The question is, which one?

Don't whisper about this book

Whispering implies it should be kept quiet, wrong! Why would you keep quiet about a great mystery? I loved this book on the kindle, so much that I just had to get it as an audio book too. The author has definitely made a fan out of me with her carefully worked plots and drama. So much is going on in the story it is hard to put it down or stop listening and then when it is over you think why did I rush? Although this is the second book in the series it makes for a great standalone cozy mystery. There is lots of side plots that run along side the main story ( I especially liked the capturing of the escaped prisoners) and as well as giving you more back ground information on the characters, such as health issues, romance, friendship and old relationships, it helps the characters develop into a likeable family that is fun to be around and make for a nice close family. I like the family business and think it makes for an unusual and interesting career for a cozy. But what I really liked was the mystery. I had guessed who the killer was but wasn't totally right, so a nice little twist that I didn't see coming. Having said that there were plenty of suspects to keep you guessing and questioning who could be trusted. I hope the author has plenty more plot lines too add to the series.
For the first time in weeks, after taking a leave of absence from her job as first Oboe for health reasons, Sara is once again picking up her beloved instrument to play in front of an audience. The opening of the new community center doesn't go smoothly when the lights go out and the man in charge of the building project is shot dead. Sara's fellow musician Mandy identifies the dead man as her step father and when she can't get hold of her birth father begs Sara to find the killer before he is arrested. After the case where she found herself in harm's way Sara is reluctant to help, even if the main suspects does seem to be Mandy's dad and her favourite ex teacher. Then a group of prisoners escape jail and the police have even less time to investigate the murder. Sara and her brother, who could be falling in love with a murder suspect Mandy herself who is keeping secrets, decide to help the police by eliminating a few of the many suspects. The dead man wasn't well liked and with good reason but who killed him and can they find the killer before he or she feels the need to strike again?
I liked the choice of narrator and thought she captured the sound of the characters perfectly and really made it easy for me to picture them.
