Penelope insists that she and Griselda, Stokes's wife, receive reports to stay duly informed of their husbands' discoveries. But what Barnaby and Stokes uncover leads only to more questions. The two least likely
Date: 1835 November
Chronology: Set after The Perfect Lover; before The Peculiar Case of Lord Finsbury's Diamonds set in December, 1836 of Barnaby’s series, also before And Then She Fell set in April of 1837 of the Cynster series.
Antecedents: Barnaby Adair has made appearances in The Truth About Love and What Price Love?. He gets his own story here with a Cynster connection, plus additional future stories of his cases.
Bold Penelope Ashford appears at Barnaby Adair’s lodgings late one night to recruit his help in finding her foundling boys who are being kidnapped. Barnaby is intrigued with a new case, with helping Penelope, and with avoiding his own matchmaking mama. He soon realizes the case is more serious than he could have guessed and enlists the aid of Inspector Basil Stokes, who enlists the aid of Miss Griselda Martin, the woman who stays on his mind. The two couples each find ways to investigate together and fall in love. We get the pleasure of their recognition of their love and then - weddings;-)
I know this is eye roll territory but Penelope and Barnaby have been the oddballs of their families - the least likely to get married and youngest of each family. These two are so nicely matched it makes you wonder how far in advance the author plotted out her characters who have both appeared in two or more previous books.
I really enjoy Prebble’s narration of the series.

This was a very good book.
The book was the standard Cynster sequel.
I really enjoyed the way the two main characters were friendly with people who weren't of their own social standing.
It was aso very refreshing to see another couple fall in love with each during all the hoopla that was going on.
It would be really nice to see the characters take another bold step and interact across the racial divide. After all, the Cynsters and the Ashfords are "Trend Setters", and they'd know just what to do make a change that would cause those around them to think about their behave in a positive manner.🤔

This is Romance and Intrigue at it’s best
This is more than just love story. It’s a classic Laurens with mystery and an erotic love story. I have had this book for several years and find myself going back when there is absolutely nothing new out there to read that’s worthwhile spending a credit on. In those times I listen to a different genre within the book. She moves between socio economic groups to deal with real life by bridging a third son switch a youngest daughter. Lauren’s does the same with a second couple. While she doesn’t fully develop them; she uses them to describe another social strata of the realm. If you don’t like erotica I would say read kiddie literature. This is not for you. If you want very well developed lives that include normal relationship development among dramatic mystery setting this is for you. The book is just long enough to not leave you hanging in any of the spheres. The characters have natural faults and the men are men especially with Simon Prebble reading.

Interesting story, but…
I found the main story about east end orphan boys being stolen away to become thieves quite engaging, but the other part of the story, a romance took up to much time and was too ‘hot’ for my taste…
